FREE BOOK PROGRAM
SCHENECTADY — Parents of children 3 to 6 years old who reside in Schalmont Central School District can access free books through the school district’s new 1,000 Book Child Program.
Those who would like to participate in the program are invited to attend a kick-off party from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Elementary School, 100 Princetown Rd.
The 1,000 Book Child Program encourages parents to regularly read to their children. As a program participant, a parent would first pick up one of 100 tote bags, each filled with 10 different children’s books. Upon returning the tote bag, the parent could then pick up another one.
The October kick-off party will include more information about this process and an opportunity for parents to sign out their fi rst bag of books. Children at the party can listen to stories, participate in a sing-a-long and enjoy some ice cream.
The 1,000 Book Child Program is run by the Jefferson Elementary School PTO and funded in part by a GE Elfun Society Grant. Schalmont offers the program because studies suggest that children between the ages of three and six who are exposed to 1,000 pieces of good literature will do better academically in school. The collection is housed at Jefferson, but parents of children who will attend any of the three Schalmont elementary schools may use the program.
    Visit http://www.schalmont.org/Jefferson/Jeff_1000booksclub.htm for more information.
