The Edison Electric Works located in Schenectady ONLY because the folks in the community were willing to buy enough stocks to a) keep the company from going under and b) to fund the start up of the Schenectady  plant.   If the people of Schenectady had not done so, the general manager (president) of Edison Electric would have hopped on board the west-bound New York Central RR train to make his pitch in other communities.
Oh -- Those communities along the Hudson River that he stopped at, made his pitch and was turned down -- I bet they are kicking themselves for turning down a upstart new technology company.

Financial incentives have ALWAYS been necessary to bring businesses and economic development to a community.

Buy stock is a  PERSONAL CHOICE  of a person.   And the person sees if he/she is getting a return on that investment or losing money.  When the person makes a PERSONAL PRIVATE CHOICE to buy stock, that person CAN sell that stock when it falls in value IF he or she CHOOSES - that is the PERSONAL PRIVATE CHOICE of the stockholder.

When the government gives handouts to PRIVATE BUSINESS, is that the PERSONAL CHOICE of the person who pays?

Well????

Are you going to answer that?

WHO is the one to decide to give money to PRIVATE business?    An individual?  Or should the government FORCIBLY make people pay??????

Well???????   Got any answer ????????

In the city of Schenectady, the PEOPLE were NOT allowed to make a PERSONAL CHOICE.   The government FORCED them to pay for PRIVATE BUSINESS  (business owned by billionaires who had more than enough money to pay 100% on their own)

In return for the homeowners being FORCED to pay, please list what they have gotten in return.

Well??????   Got an answer to that question???????    Huh???????

What's the matter?   Does it hurt to see a non-taxpayer be asked to explain why the poor taxpayers should forcibly pay for the rich?  Does it hurt to see a non-taxpayer be asked what the homeowners in the city have gotten in return for their forced "investment" in downtown?

Read other posts and maybe you'll get it...but I doubt it! You haven't gotten it to date and likely never will!

My understanding is that a large part of the incentives were private folks buying stocks.  However, I understand that there was some "involvement" of the local politicians in building up that support.

But government incentives were not out of the question  back then -- would have to do more research to get specifics.

The original Western Gateway Bridge (the wooden "Burr Bridge")  was an example of private-public partnership in economic development.  That is a longer story - but it literally turned Schenectady from a by-passed, backwater village into a major commercial hub.

I guess I am a fool too or to quote my Dads saying I am an Idiot. We won't go into The Idiot club. So I thought Needs/Wants and location location  location  were keys to a business.  Private Investors, stocks all fine.  Government hand outs to keep people from going hungry or homeless, ok. As far as the government investing in private business,  ???   I'm stuck in between of if available and not burdening others that are barely getting by.  As a American I'm always glad to see anything with an American ties or even a name do well, even the horse winning and having American in the name. As far as the constitution being violated by lawmakers or politicians was a (little bit) of surprise.  As far as this eminent domain for a school or hospital or important roadway, ok.   As far as vacant lots that were mowed, I don't see how they can be blight?  I don't post often, but this post drew it out me. Lol.

offering businesses taxpayer money to lure them to the city is one issue.

what about the issue of the government giving already existing 'wealthy' businesses taxpayer money to 'stay' (marcella's comes to mind)...or to 'relocate' (vila italia comes to mind)

To lure them into the city?  At cost too?  Wealthy businesses ? need to be lured?   Schenectady is located centralized in New York state and major roadways in the state.  I'm not  sure about world population doubling in the last two generations or something like that, that I saw on PBS or how Schenectady again needs to lure???

Financial incentives have ALWAYS been necessary to bring businesses and economic development to a community.

When do financially struggling homeowners get a break on their taxes in return for paying for these incentives given to the billionaire political cronies.

Why do billionaires "NEED" financial incentives?   Billionaires "NEED" the money from families with incomes of $40,000?  Billionaires "NEED" the money more than the financially struggling families trying to feed and clothe their children?

What have the financially struggling homeowners in the city gotten in return for paying for all the palaces for the billionaire political cronies?

Yeah, we know, you just love to type the stupid crap that you do, but you totally speechless to explain why the poor must pay for the rich.  Such a loser.

all of these vacant properties are folks walking away and fleeing the city....and good for them!!!

DON'T LOOK TO THE GOVERNMENT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS THE GOVERNMENT CREATED IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!! DUH!
BOTH reps and dems!!!

True, any party

However, do we have any official records showing that the Carl Co, Wallace's, Barney's, Lerner's, Apex Music Store, Schenectady Savings Bank, Schenectady Savings and Loan, Woolworths, Singer Sewing Center, Planter's Peanuts, Imperial's, Junior Bootery, Two Guys, the various offices (attorneys, insurance companies, accountants), Wallace Armer, etc got handouts from the taxpayers to build their downtown buildings or buy and renovate them?

Inasmuch as it's not proper, moral, or ethical to take taxpayer money and give it to private business as a financial incentive, it would be one thing if homeowners got a return on their investment, but no one, especially the one who claims Metroplex is a solid investment which has provided tremendous dividends, has listed for us what the dividends are that the homeowners in their neighborhoods have gotten for their "investment."
