WWII vet made such an absurd statement to imply the US was responsible for
Pearl Harbor as you insinuate, and when asked about this conspiracy theory, to

I found it interesting that FDR knew US involvement in WW2 was inevitable, but wanted to prepare the American public in a way that was very different from was done in WWI... in the 1940 re-election campaign he went from saying we wouldn't get involved unless we were attacked to flat out lying by saying we wouldn't get involved period.....it all depended on the crowd he was talking to... This infuriated the GOP nominee Wendell Wilke, who knew the truth as much as FDR did.

Interesting note about what would have happened if the GOP won in 1940... both the Presidential and vice presidential GOP candidates were dead by 1944 (although the VP candidate died first)...
