The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

It should be fair to all who are now registered legally and not single out any group to be treated unfairly.
Lets start with Voter ID for all Registered Republicans, since they are so in favor of this law.  We can require
all Republicans to have a Voter ID by say ... this November 1st.  Sort of a trial basis. If it works well for those Republicans who want this plan... then it can be implemented for all voters by the following November.

I haven't been following this fabricated story too closely, but from what I've read, it is a mandate for ALL registered voters.  It doesn't mandate a voter id for a specific political party.  Democrats are claiming their constituents are affected at a greater rate than republicans.  Their argument is it affects them disproportionately.

Majority rules box.

Gee Box, are you suppressing the voters that don't register in one of the two major parties?

Mississippi Voter ID Law

Though it has yet to be fully implemented, Mississippi’s new voter identification law is already posing a
challenge to some people hoping to register to vote. That’s because some residents are trapped in a
legal limbo where, to get a voter ID, they need a birth certificate, and to get a birth certificate, they
first need a photo ID.

Mississippi is one of several states that have aggresively pursued voter ID laws to crack down on alleged
voter fraud. Under the state’s new rules, voters must present an approved form of photo identification
in order to vote. The state is offering free IDs to anyone who needs them, though to get one, applicants
must present a birth certificate. However, to get a birth certificate, applicants for that documentation
also need a photo ID. Not having a photo ID is why most people need a voter ID in the first place.

The Mississippi voter ID law is currently on hold because it is under review by the Department of Justice.
Critics contend that the law, and others like it, infringe on voting rights and disproportionately target
poor citizens and minorities.

Birth certificates are provided BY DEFAULT to the parents of a child born in the state.
When I had to get my working papers, all I had to do is ask my parents for mine.
Is the justice department saying that poor citizens and minorities are too irresponsible to hold on to, or know where their birth certificate is?

So in Tbird's world... If your parents lose your birth certificate... you can never VOTE!

It would appear that the Dems think that their voters are too stupid to know where to get their birth certificate if they have lost theirs.

Nope, not saying that... now answer my question. Does the justice department think that poor citizens and minorities are less responsible to know where their birth certificate is, than people that are not poor or a minority???
Sure sounds like that to me.

I think you and I can find some common ground on this birth certificate issue.  I see no need for the government to even issue a birth certificate. Why does the government need documentation of every birth and require it for things like passports and enrollment into government schools?

If you are wealthy, your birth certificate is in your daddy's safe, or at his safe deposit box at his bank.
IF you're poor, especially living in Hurricane Prone Mississippi... your birth certificate is probably in a cardboard
box under the bed.

Either way, the Good Republicans of Mississippi passed this lame legislation to suppress the vote, not to
end voter fraud.  That's why the Justice Dept is investigating this attack on Americans voting rights.

Bullshit, Box.. My parents were neither rich, or had a safe. Nice Liberal stereotyping there...
Let me do some of my own...If those irresponsible poor and minorities can't hold on to a birth certificate, why do they manage to hold on to their government checks and food stamps vouchers?

We all make assumptions... I was making an assumption about living poor in a hurricane zone.

Other "assumptions" seem to be that the voters being disenfranchised are all poor, minorities, and that
they get government checks and use food stamps.

For what ever reason that they no longer have their birth certificate... if it was lost, stolen, misplaced or
swept away in a Mississippi hurricane... the new law does require a voter ID...
To get a voter ID, they need a birth certificate, and to get a birth certificate, they
first need a photo ID.

Every town/village/city has records that can be checked and if you were born here then your birth record is on file. The local police dept also will issue a photo ID to students or seniors who don't have one.

.[/b]

And the Justice departments assumption is if you are poor or are a minority, you are less likely to have your birth certificate than anyone else.

And I ask why do they assume this?
What about minorities that aren't poor?
What about poor people that aren't minorities?
