Schenectady County proposes 1.5 percent tax hike
By LAUREN STANFORTH Staff writer
Updated 03:54 p.m., Wednesday, October 5, 2011

SCHENECTADY-- The county is joining other local governments in meeting the state's new property tax cap in its proposed 2012 budget.

The $294.9 million budget presented by County Manager Kathleen Rooney on Sept. 30 calls for an increase of 1.5 percent in the total amount to be raised by property taxes. While the increase is under the 2 percent cap, it's the first time since 2009 that Schenectady County has proposed raising taxes.

The owner of a home valued at $142,500 is expected to pay $13.60 more in taxes next year. The budget increases spending by 0.68 percent over this year's $293 million plan.

...
A public hearing on the 2012 spending plan will be Oct. 17, and the county legislature is expected to vote on it on Oct. 19.

ASK THE COUNTY ABOUT THE COLA'S AND GUARANTEED PENSIONS....

Thought they were saving money with cheaper health insurance and Canadian pharmacies? County is raising taxes. Town is raising taxes above the Cuomo cap. Schenectady is raising taxes and every fee. Thank you working together team!

County taxes are going up .. because Mr. Farley and Mr. Amedore haven't done anything to cut unfunded State mandates ...   it is time to find replacements for these two.

btw, to which town are you referring, Mr Wallach>? Glenville? Yes, Glenville did raise its taxes 3.3 percent, nearly twice the tax cap level. why did they not cut and do what they could to help the poor sheeple of that poor town? Perhaps in Nov. people will remember this and make a change...

Perhaps not.

SB, Glenville did not go above the tax cap. Nor did the City of Schenectady. Thus far, I haven't heard of any city or town which has gone over the 2%. Get over it, you are wrong.

Now, the real issue are the taxes and fees which the city and towns have manuvered around to get more money from the taxpayers. Yes, Glenville has and the City of Schenectady has.

Glenville total increase 3.3%
City of Schenectady with fees  + 7%

Take into consideration that the City taxpayers pay double that of Glenville residents already. Now the City taxpayers can thank the county for another 1.5% increase.

Not to say you're wrong on this, but exactly which federal mandates did Mr. Tonko, Mr. Schumer and/or Ms. Gillibrand help to cut?

That would be half of the county tax bill  state and FEDERAL mandates bill.

Unfunded State mandates are the lion's share of the problem - at the county level ... so that is the problem we need to tackle first --- voting Farley and Amedore  OUT

As for Mr. Tonko, Mr. Schumer and Ms. Gillibrand, I believe they bring enough $$$ in federal grants INTO the county to offset any federal mandates.

And what is it that pays for those "federal grants?"  That would ALSO be taxpayer money, unless you think that would be money that was donated from the hard working American citizens who wanted to see the money going to these projects...

As long as the federal government is handing out grants, I want representatives in DC who will be getting as much grant $$$ directed to the Town of  Rotterdam and Schenectady County as possible.

I want them to STOP handing out grants and I want our local leaders to STOP accepting the ones that make us start new programs or build new programs and infrastructure that require maintenance and investment in the future!

Once these damn things expire they become heavy boat anchors because you have started new programs and hired workers (often patronage positions for Daggy relatives and such) that will be paid for BY LOCAL TAX DOLLARS once the grant expires. Worse yet -(only a home owner could really understand this) we CAN"T EVEN MAINTAIN ALL THE BUILDINGS AND INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE IN PLACE SO WHY THE HELL DO WE NEED TO BUILD MORE!!!!!!!!!!!?????

Other counties and municipalities across the country have been applying for and receiving these federal grants --- and enjoying the benefits of these federal dollars in the form of modernized infrastructure, growing tax bases, job creation and a better quality of life ------------  the uninformed NNTP crowd thinks that is Schenectady County and the Town of Rotterdam does NOT apply for the grants that our federal taxes will magically get lower ..  the FACT is .. the $$$ for the grants has already been appropriated (for you tea-drinking NNTPers that means SPENT)  --- so if we don't get the grant SOMEONE ELSE WILL.

I am tired of my federal and state tax dollars being used BY OTHER COMMUNITIES and not by us -- I'll proudly vote for representatives who will "shake every tree" to get every grant that we can lay our hands on.
