There are people that like/love living in Schenectady for a variety of reasons.  Regardless of their reason, no one should have to bit@h and moan to receive the services from the city that they pay for.  People in the city should NEVER have to pay for property taxes for GE or Galesi  or anything downtown.  ESPECIALLY when these businesses (like GE and Quirky that quickly come to mind) make promises that are not kept.  And then, they don't pay back the "loans."   Remember, I think it was the Van Dyck, the homeowners in the city TWICE bailed them out.   And wasn't there something similar with the Parker Inn   No one should EVER feel like they have to move out of a city that they like/love--whatever their reason--because they are paying taxes of the rich and bailing out the cronies of the elected.



And think of this. If you bought a house in Schenectady at the beginning of 2005 for $100,000 and got the usual 30 year mortgage and let's say the rates were as low as 4% back in 2005, you would still owe about $77,000 today.  So you find a house outside of the city for $110,000.  You've listed your house in Schenectady and the asking price is now down to $55,000 and finally you have an offer for $50,000.  What bank will approve a mortgage for you with a $77,000 debt on a house that which could mean you would have to get a mortgage on your "new" house for $27,000 above it's value.  How many banks will issue a mortgage for an amount that exceeds the appraised value by close to 25%?   And while it's not necessary to roll your "old" mortgage balance into the new mortgage remember that the mortgage amount you still owe (would still owe after sale) is factored into the debt to income radio may preclude you from getting approved for a mortgage for a new house.


Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.  
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

2005 was the height of the housing bubble. Values of all homes have declined since then.

And furthermore....anyone smart wouldn't have bought a home in the city of Schenectady even 10 YEARS AGO!!!

Home values have declined across the country...due to the housing bubble that was CREATED by the FEDS!!

Complain to the feds homes outside of Schenectady are increasing in value while in Schenectady they are falling in value.  The complaint is to the leaders of Schenectady.


I randomly picked 2005.  How about someone who bought a house in the city in 1985 and had equity and then got a mortgage to do a remodel or build an addition?  

Some people can't qualify for a mortgage of $175,000, $200,000, and higher to live outside of Schenectady.  When your total household income is less than $40,000 you are limited to the amount of a mortgage that you can get.  So do you spend 60 years of adult life throwing away your money and never having anything to show for it?

Now, how come home values are increasing outside of Schenectady?   Why are home values in Schenectady falling so much that the city THE MOST OVER ASSSESSED in the whole state of New York

Home values are falling and McCarthy makes a decision to require Schenectady's homeowners to pay the taxes of GE.   Is GE so poor it can't pay it's own taxes?  And in increasing the taxes on the homeowners, McCarthy is causing home values in the city to fall so much that the city is the most over assessed city in the whole state and McCarthy refuses to do a reassessment.  Unfortunately the people in the city don't know that GE is exempt from property taxes.  Was there ever a front page headline with big bold print that said "Schenectady Mayor exempts GE from property and school tax" with a sub headline saying "Schenectady homeowners to pay GE's property taxes"   I don't think there ever was such a headline.  It was more likely a quiet hush hush backroom deal.

Wait until the fed raises interest rates.  If you think the value is low now, wait until the cheap money that is inflating the current property values goes away and interest rates rise.  How much will your property be worth if mortgage rates go to 6%?

Default and file bankruptcy.  Property values aren't going up anytime soon.  There is nothing that ANY mayor can do about it.

GE moves renewable energy headquarters from Schenectady to Paris

Schenectady move to Paris, creation of GE Renewable Energy in Alstom deal

Schenectady

General Electric Co. has officially moved its renewable energy business from Schenectady to Paris following its $10 billion acquisition of the energy business of French conglomerate Alstom SA.

GE's renewable energy business was located in Schenectady and operated under Anne McEntee until the Alstom deal closed on Nov. 2.

GE employs roughly 4,000 people at its Schenectady campus, home to GE Power, including a large GE steam turbine and generator plant.

The move was made as part of a series of concessions to the French government and also because Alstom has a robust offshore wind business that GE did not have. The new renewable energy business will focus increasingly on offshore wind from the Paris location. Jérome Pécresse is the new GE Renewable Energy CEO.

Previously, GE's renewable energy business had operated as a subset of GE Power & Water, now known as GE Power. Now the renewable energy business is a so-called Tier 1 unit that will report directly to GE CEO Jeff Immelt.

"With the creation of our new business, GE now has one of the world's largest renewable energy footprints, and our goal is to help drive the wind industry forward by drawing on the shared expertise of two innovative companies," Pécresse said.

McEntee will be CEO of GE's onshore wind unit, which will still be based in Schenectady. GE also recently shut down its new battery plant in Schenectady that used to be part of renewable energy. GE officials in Schenectady have claimed that the move of the company's headquarters to Paris will not involve any job losses because the Paris operation is largely Alstom's offshore wind unit, and the onshore wind unit remains intact in Schenectady.

"Over the past few years, we have really focused on making our wind business more global," McEntee said in a statement. "The Alstom deal helps us gain local experience in key growth regions, and we will be extending our services capabilities to a broader group of customers across the newly combined fleet."

With the Alstom deal, GE can now offer its new offshore Haliade turbine. Alstom had built up a significant backlog of orders, including the 30-megawatt Deepwater Wind offshore wind farm off Block Island, the first in the United States. That means GE is now at the vanguard of offshore wind development in the U.S. and globally. New York is poised to build its own offshore wind farm off the coast of Long Island in the coming years.

"Offshore wind is a challenging industry, but we believe the market has real potential," Anders Soe-Jensen, CEO of GE's offshore wind unit, said in a statement. "Our goal is to work closely with customers to continue validating our technology as we begin to scale and grow the business."
