Anyone here have or had in the past direct TV?  I keep getting offers and I'm thinking of getting rid of Time Warner as the costs went way up.

I got rid of all cable.  Sick of paying for 200 channels just to watch 3 of them.

we've had them both.....may start out cheaper in the beginning....but they all end up the same.

I just switched to Direct TV, from Time Warner. I had allot of issues with Time Warner's products, i.e. allot of their stuff just doesn't work, my friend who works for them as an installer explained to me the equipment they give out is to old to run their newer options consistently and the company is too cheap to give customers newer technology. Also their network easily gets overwhelmed, i.e. on nights were allot of people are ordering On-Demand the system goes down. Direct TV has a much better DVR, the NFL ticket, and for the most part everything works as it should. The only issue I have had, is it does cut out during severe storms. Direct TV for what I need is also about $15 a month cheaper, even after their initial pricing discount expired.

I switched to directv 2 years ago. It was $59 a month for the 1st year, and jumped to $92 a month for the 2nd year.

I kept time warner basic( channels 2 - 23) to keep roadrunner.

My time warner bill was up to $220 a month when I switched.

Now my time warner bill is still $83.

It's still $45 cheaper than when I had only Time Warner.

Play one against the other to get the best rate.... they WILL work with you if threaten to leave.

I've had both, currently with Directv..

Directv pros: superior picture quality
                  Better customer service than TWC
                  SLIGHTLY cheaper for equivalent package

Directv cons: it WILL go out in a storm, more often that I thought it would
                   They rarely mount dishes on roof anymore re:liability issues, as such, depending on your lot and
                   Neighbors, you could have reception issues because of an overgrown tree or bush...  

NEITHER - I dropped about a year ago. Some are hooked on programming that is only offered on the bigger packages, but then you are a slave to the provider and yearly price increases.

I get about 20 channels most in HD for a one time cost of $50 and a little install time. I kept high speed internet $45 and picked up phone through TWC $10 and stream Netflix $10.

Buy your own modem and wireless router instead of renting their OLD crappy stuff and everything runs so much faster.

we just got a rate increase from tw....112/month to 128/month for expanded cable and internet....no phone.

we told them to drop us down to basic cable....75/month would be for basic and internet.

they switched me to 3 different folks.

finally they told me they would keep the 112/month...our original cost.

however, I think I may call and go to basic/internet for $75.00

and yes you can definitely negotiate.

thanks for all info, don't mind if stations go out during a severe storm as I usually shut the TV off anyways : )  Will try negotiating one more time with

DTV is far superior to cable in the fact that you are getting a true digital transmission and you don't have to worry about a tree falling down and wiping out the cable line that comes to your home.

If your power goes out and you have a backup generator, you'll still be able to watch all your shows.

There are, however, two very slight 'inconveniences' that will effect you

1) Thunderstorms. A sizable thunderhead passing to your south will interrupt your signal for a time until it passes.

2) Heavy wet snow. You know the type. The sh*t that sticks to everything. Well, once it starts sticking to your dish, your going to loose signal until you either clear it off or it melts enough for the signal to get through.

Try and get the installer to put it in a place where you can get to it. This way it will be easy to clear off in case this happens.

Buck, Is it possible to put some low level heating element on the dish like used on roofs
to melt the snow and not interfere with the signal?

I can't see why you couldn't if you could figure out a way to mount it to the back of the dish.
