SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A video that appears to show a woman shooting heroin at a Schenectady bus stop has made the rounds on social media.
Tracy Gardner said she was at the Steuben bus stop when she claims a woman started shooting up heroin.
“I was angry. I was mortified,” Gardner said. “This is not the kind of thing you want to see in your community at a public bus stop.”
Gardner was shocked at how brazen the woman was to do it in broad daylight.
Dr. Adam Gorman is a clinical psychologist and addiction specialist. He said the video is a sign of how rampant heroin addiction in the Capital Region has become.
“Heroin withdrawal – imagine the worst flu you’ve ever had and multiple it by 20,” he said. “It’s absolutely awful, and that’s why it’s so important to seek professional care.”
Marsha Penrose is the executive director of The Next Step in Albany, a residential treatment center for women recovering from addiction. She said patients won’t likely get help on their own.
“People, unfortunately, will opt for jail rather than get treatment,” she said.
That’s why Penrose wishes someone had done something more for the woman in the video.
“Someone who is in that stage of a disease, I would believe just by looking at it on the surface, is in need of long-term treatment,” she said.
Both Dr. Gorman and Penrose said there may not be many programs out there, but there are people who want to help.
