A home on Union Street in Schenectady has been sectioned off with crime tape for a police investigation.

NewsChannel 13's Anna Meiler is there right now working to get more information on exactly what happened.

So far one body recovered and one person found extremely dehydrated  in the basement.  Someone called being concerned about not seeing the man in a few days.  Thank God for people thinking of others and doing the welfare check.  They are getting a search warrant to check the other apartments the last I heard.

By the way.  Check on your neighbors especially the disabled and elderly during this heat wave.  I lost a friend of mine one year he couldn't afford an air conditioner and the housing program he was in didn't give a hoot.  He lived on a top floor apartment and was overcome by the heat.  Remember the disabled and elderly are many times on many medications that make them more vulnerable.

I wondered what had happened. When I drove past there yesterday it was taped off,with cop cars and news cameras everywhere. An elderly woman dead and an old man severely dehydrated. I am going to guess that one or both has dementia, the woman died of natural causes-stroke, heart attack, fall, etc. and the gentleman was too confused to know what to do. I am hoping it's not a case of someone imprisonjng them, but just a tragic accident.

Agree! Extreme hot....or.....extreme cold.....snow storms......power outages.....etc.....

Channel 13 has reported an arrest. Can't link to the story from my phone but the man was attacked with a shovel and buried under debris. The woman's cause of death is still unknown.

After I posted earlier in the morning, I drove by and saw even more tape, more news crews and cops were still on site.  I knew then that my dementia guess was most likely wrong and it was turning bad.

SCHENECTADY - Police investigating the discovering of a disoriented man and a woman's decomposed body at a Union Street home say the man was hit in the head with a shovel and then buried alive by a suspect who now faces an attempted murder charge.

The dazed man was taken to Ellis Hospital after police found him at 1330 Union St., on Wednesday. The discovery led to a grisly find in the basement:
the badly decomposed body of a woman.

Police hope to learn how she died from an autopsy scheduled to take place Thursday morning.

Michael H. Ortiz, 44, of Schenectady was charged overnight with attempted murder and unlawful imprisonment for allegedly hitting the man with a
shovel before burying him under several feet of debris in the basement of the building.

No word yet on charges in connection with the discovery of the body.

SCHENECTADY - Police have made an arrest in connection with the body found Wednesday at a home on Union Street.

Police say Wednesday they arrived at 1330 Union Street to check on the welfare of a man who lives there.

They say they found the man in the basement in deteriorating health. Police say Michael Ortiz, 44, struck the man in the head with a shovel and then buried him under several feet of debris. Ortiz is charged with attempted murder and unlawful imprisonment.

NewsChannel 13 is working to find out how Ortiz and the victim knew each other.

Police also found the body of a woman at the home. They are still trying to figure out who she is and how she died. An autopsy on her body will be performed Thursday morning at 10 a.m.

Wow, this guy they arrested sounds like a real winner.  Downstater who just got out of prison in July.

I heard the dehydrated guy was handcuffed in the basement.
