Do you live in one of the most dangerous cities in New York?

We all watch the news with horror when we hear about a crime that happens not that far away from us. Sometimes our moms will even call to check on us if something happens in NYC, even if we live 50 miles away from it. While a major crime just blocks or towns away from your house would make anyone uneasy, in the long run, most likely, where you live is relatively safe.

For instance, most people (from both inside and outside of New York) would assume that New York City would be somewhere on this list of most dangerous cities in New York. Known for the Italian mafia, gang violence, and tons of stories of cell phone robberies, it’s hard to believe this city doesn’t make the top ten. In reality, it just barely makes the top 50! New York City is actually the 47th most dangerous city out of 138 with populations over 10,000.

So we wanted to get the facts straight and dug into the FBI crime data in order to identify the most dangerous places in New York with populations over 10,000. The result is the following list of top ten most dangerous:
1.Niagara Falls
2.Buffalo
3.Rochester
4.Binghamton
5.Syracuse
6.Schenectady
7.Johnson City Village
8.Newburgh
9.Albany
10.Troy

How we calculated the most dangerous places to live in New York

While there are surveys and public polls on what cities in a state are the most dangerous, we didn’t want to rely on speculation and opinion. Instead, we looked at the hard numbers from the FBI’s last three years of reporting. Specifically, we analyzed the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report which summarizes the number of property crimes and violent crimes in each city per year.

Violent crimes are defined as rapes, murders, robberies and aggravated assaults.

We only looked at cities that have populations of more than 10,000 people as of 2013, which is the last year the report was available.

Finally, we made 2013 factor more heavily than 2012, since more recent crimes are a bigger determining factor in how dangerous a place is. You can see our overall ranking at the bottom of the post.

We must note that this report is not an analysis of the effectiveness of local police departments. It simply states where crimes occurred most frequently.

Wow Bumbler... Schenectady sounds awful!!!
So... Since you often post about the crime rate in Chicago... how does 'evil' Chicago
compare to Schdy???

Chicago violent crime rate  5.88
Schenectady violent crime rate  9.40
Chicago is nearly twice as safe as Schdy!!!

The waiting list for section 8 housing in the county proves that out.

But

    but but but but but

The crime rate is down in Schenectady -- including murders -- according to the FBI crime statistics.
Schenectady has turned the corner .. and is coming back to life.

1st 3 months of 2015:
CHICAGO — After recording the fewest murders in decades last year, violence is soaring: a 40% increase in shootings and 29% more homicides in the first three months of the year.

The city has recorded 355 shootings this year as of Monday compared with 253 shootings for the first quarter of 2014, ACCORDING to crime statistics released by the Chicago Police Department on Wednesday.

Eighty murders were recorded in the first quarter of 2015. There were 62 in the same period last year.

Oh -- and Chicago has one of the worst records for solving murders -- only 26% of homicides are solved.

OMG...be real.......the city is out of control where crime is concerned....the news does not report everything that is going on.....

and 3 murders in the last months.....a man beaten and on life support.....theft, home invasions, shootings...

ya don't need to be a rocket scientist  to realize that the city is not safe...

an out of town  friend of mine drove into the neighborhood where he lived 40 years ago.....and came upon the area where this last shooting

took place......his reaction was one of unbelief....at the same time ...glad he had moved out of that area ..in fact out of the state...

sad to have to come "home" and realize "what has happened to the city I grew up in"....

More police presence is needed .....and the perps still have not been caught.....

I agree with everything except the need for more police presence.
it's not going to make any difference.
there are harsh laws already in place and these violent folks don't really care.
we live in a very violent culture, void of morals at any level.
until the heart of man changes.....this will continually get worse.
you can't force or legislate morals/values on folks.....don't work....obviously.

the heart of a man won't change until society changes....and that starts from the top to bottom....

get the Natl Guard in here....like they do at these other areas....before we see what happened in other states.....
