Not surprised... I go by their location often.. I have NEVER seen more than 10 cars there at any one time... They did fine at their old location and food was very good, I think the downtime they had moving to a new place hurt to the point of no return.

Agreed. Not necessarily the driving force. But you have to wonder why businesses are requesting property tax exemptions and subsidies if it has little impact on the overall success of the business. They're negotiating these deals for a reason. I have a sneaky suspicion that it's because it helps their bottom line.

I didn't give anything. The money is taken from those of us that can't afford lobbyists to stop the extortion. Those that can afford the lobbyists(like Musk) use the government to do the extorting for them. And the guy selling untaxed cigarettes gets choked to death for not paying taxes. Patches, I seem to recall some kind of "Hogan's" connection to the place, way, way, back. That's why there was the green tam o' shanter, or maybe it was a shamrock, on the sign. I think the Town House was the one that mysteriously burned, at Fehr and State. I don't see where bt even said the Squire was downtown. The people running the Squire are new owners of an old business, operating on a shoestring budget, or they were attempting to, while the city gave away gobs of money to their competitors. I know one downtown bar has snotty staff, but the place is all shiny new inside on our dime, so it doesn't hurt them any. The fact that some pavement was paid for on Union Street, doesn't constitute any sort of handout to the business and is completely irrelevant to their situation. I know people who don't pay taxes won't understand this. I know a man who owns a building, he's been holding on to it for years, he isn't going to open it as a bar unless and until he gets some of that free government money. Apparently he knows that it matters.

Upper Union Street has gotten a lot more than just "a little paving." Hell - the now faux brick paving at Dean and Union - which was for a brief time real brick - cost taxpayers well over $1 million -- first to put the real bricks in then to remove them and replace them with faux brick that could actually stand up to the traffic. And a lot of that money was given to Upper Union Street when City Hall was controlled by the other party.

If full taxation doesn't affect profits, why are they being granted exemptions? Are politicians just giving the money away? If Mallozzi made a deal to move Villa Italia downtown only if they were exempt and subsidized, then they are being greedy and just taking the exemption to pad their profits and make everybody else pay for the supporting infrastructure that they benefit from.
It's funny how the "fair share" democrats turn a blind eye to their wealthy donors when they pay "no share".

They were looking "in Schdy" and were approached by Metro to move to that specific area and were enticed by the Metro money. Had they not been approached, they still had plans to move to somewhere in Schdy. Metro made them an offer that made good business sense for them.So they never were greedy as you say, that they would only move if given incentives.... in actually, they made smart a "BUSINESS" decision, like it or not. Business 101...try it sometime!

They had a successful business in their Rotterdam location...I knew of people that would travel down from Glens Falls to buy their products... there is NO WAY they would commit to sell their building without another location all but locked up. At the time, there was noise that they were considering moving to Colonie...it was THAT rumor that started Metroplex approaching them... Villa Italia is owned by the Malozzi's...who are good friends with people at the Galesi group....it doesn't take much connecting the dots to figure out how it happened.
It was a shrewd move by them... the move to Schenectady w/o Metro's money would only mean more taxes for them because the rate is lower in Rotterdam....they baited Metro, and Metro took it...

Ahhh...Joey rewriting history! Try Goggle Search 101. Villia Itaila threatened to move to ALBANY OR SARATOGA COUNTY before settling for Schenectady.
Yeah!!! It's a great "BUSINESS" decision. $580K in loans and grants, along with an open ended property tax exemption. Albany and Saratoga were not willing to bend their residents over and give them a royal screwing for the honor of having Mallozzi sell pastries there.
But like you said joey, subsidies and tax break have little affect on a business's profits. Mallozzi was just willing to take the taxpayers money. Hey, if they're offering it, may as well line your pockets with it.

The Mallozzis will relocate their Villa Italia Bakery from Rotterdam to 226 Broadway, using a $400,000 loan from the Metroplex Development Authority and a $180,000 state grant.
The Mallozzi family will invest $1.42 million into the project, which involves purchasing a nd remodeling a 5,000-square-foot structure and building a 1,500-square-foot addition.
The project is expected to bring 40 jobs downtown and tie into the city’s growing arts and entertainment district, which is anchored by Proctor’s Theatre.
Precision Industrial, which currently occupies 226 Broadway, will relocate to Erie Boulevard on a site that once housed Callanan Industries.
Robert Mallozzi credited local officials for working together to keep the bakery in the county. “There’s a new, great team spirit in Schenectady and a creative climate to promote economic development downtown,” he said.
The family was on the verge of relocating the bakery to Colonie when city and county officials intervened.
"We had specific locations picked out in Albany and Saratoga counties. For one, the ink was almost dry,” Mallozzi said. “I can’t emphasize enough how aggressive Metroplex was in bringing us here. It’s a good deal for everyone.”
The family last year had sold the Rotterdam property containing the Villa Italia Bakery to an adjacent church, which needed additional parking. The church gave the Mallozzis five years “to shop around for a new location,” Mallozzi said
