No way of knowing if that is the reason.  Nobody knows what their margins would be if given thousands in tax exemptions.  Thousands of dollars could be used for sanitation staffing and cleaning supplies.  Customer service may have been poor, I've never been there.  It would be interesting to see the sanitation budgets of the downtown exempt establishments compared to those that pay full.  I'm willing to bet the exempt businesses contract their cleaning out while the others are cleaned by owner operator.

While I understand your point, I'd have to disagree when it comes to cleaning. Cooks should be cleaning their own kitchen. That is the norm for any cook staking their reputation on the safety and quality of the food they are serving. Wait staff should be maintaining the dinning area. You may need a dish washer, but there really shouldn't be the need for a specialized cleaning staff.

The only Way I feel your arguement would really apply in this case  would apply is if this place is not nearly the rude dump  that is being rumored, the extra cash could perhaps help in an advertising campaign to change their image.

I can tell you for certain that a successful Rotterdam restaurant contracts a cleaning service to detail clean their kitchen 2 to 3 times per week.  I'm not saying that is a reason for their success.  But the ability to pay for that service not only  improves the appearance of the kitchen, but also gives your kitchen staff a break.

Again...this business owner may have run an awful business.  But it doesn't change the fact his competitors have a financial edge through preferred PILOT exemptions.

Does your example restaurant receive financial assistance from Gov?
If they've been in business for a long period of time, I doubt it.

I don't want to answer for the C man, and he'll probably jump in when he bids the sandman farewell, but I could hazard a guess as to what eatery he's talking about, and although this particular dining destination may not directly receive govt. funding the empire that runs it does, so I guess there might be a trickle down effect going on.

At any rate, since my previously stated OCD with eating anywhere other than my own spotless kitchen keeps me out of these places, I'll ease on out of this discussion and leave it to ya'll. Got bigger fish to fry.

Nope, it doesn't.  But that had nothing to do with my response to parent.  This resturant doesn't have tax exempt competitors popping up in a two mile radius of it.  If it did, there is a good chance they would lose market share to their new government subsidized competitors, and would lose sales, and would likely have to cut overhead costs.  Which may include cutting their contracted cleaning service.

But is another example of how the GOV SUBSISIES are not the driving force behind
success.  Yet certain others are using that as the main failure...!

Agreed.  Not necessarily the driving force.  But you have to wonder why businesses are requesting property tax exemptions and subsidies if it has little impact on the overall success of the business.  They're negotiating these deals for a reason.  I have a sneaky suspicion that it's because it helps their bottom line.

While the City Squire may not have received public monies, it was smack in the middle of the Upper Union Street Business District which has benefited from literally millions of dollars in city funds -- streetscape improvements, public parking lots built, etc. etc.  Upper Union Street was being funded by City Hall long before Downtown got 2 rusty nickels to rub together    So public money being spent is probably not a factor.

The City Squire catered to an older crowd.  My guess is that its clientele had literally "died off."  In business, you have to keep up with the times or face extinction.

You don't have to own a business to understand simple economics.  It's as simple as understanding that if you pay income tax and your coworker that makes the same amount of money as you doesn't pay income tax, your coworker will have more money in their pocket at the end of the year.  You will have to work more hours to net the same amount as your coworker not paying income tax.  It's not rocket science.

Umm, I think you missed the sarcasm in Cicero's post..

Would not surprise me...am told service and quality have been declining.
Of course, within short order, this too will be blamed on the Gov and financial
incentives...not on the actual reasons!
