Schenectady officer caught playing with kids

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Schenectady officer caught on camera playing ball with some neighborhood kids is receiving praise for his actions.

“It wasn’t something that like, oh you know, that I wanted to make national headlines,” the kids’ mother, Danielle Gross, said. “It wasn’t that at all.”

But the cell phone video she took of the officer has.

The video shows Officer Tim Rizzo playing in the front yard with Gross’ kids after he responded to an emergency call next door. Once the situation was taken care of, the officer joined in on the fun.

Gross said his actions have left a lasting impression with her children.

“My daughter’s like, ‘He’s the greatest officer ever,’” Gross explained. “They were so excited. They were talking about it all day after school. He definitely deserves to be recognized for it. I know he doesn’t want to, but he deserved it. They don’t get thanked enough for what they do.

Officer Rizzo has been with the Schenectady Police Department for seven years. He said he had no idea Gross was recording.

Rizzo also said it wasn’t the first time he, or any officer, has stopped to interact with neighborhood kids; it was just the first time it was caught on camera.

“Yeah, it’s nice,” he said. “It’s part of our job is community interaction. We do it when we have a chance. It’s something that I do fairly regularly. We all do it at the police department. They just happened to catch it on video this time.”

The video has hundreds of thousands of views on Facebook, which surprised both Officer Rizzo and Gross.

“I didn’t think it would get as big as it did,” Gross said. “It was more for, like, my family and friends to see. Like, ‘Hey you guys. Look what happened with my kids.’ I want to brag about my kids.”

“But you’re not the only one that does it,” Rizzo said. “It’s not uncommon. We’re surprised that it’s this big of a deal to be honest.”

The police department has invited Gross and the kids back to the station for a tour, so they can see patrol cars and interact with more officers.

Gross said the kids are really looking forward to that, and they plan on making a visit there very soon.

Little does she know.  If officer Rizzo told the her to stop playing ball and she didn't comply with his command, she would have gotten shot with electrified barbs until she obeyed.

....yes, agreed.  But partially truthful.  All police commands MUST be obeyed - lawful or unlawful.

Sorry I didn't get all mushy over the Gazette puff piece. For all I know, that officer could be a crack head, wife beater, be a drug mule, or drag girls out of bars that deny his advances. But one must never question of the character of the person behind the badge. Just obey.

Could be...But the examples I gave were actual behaviors of Schenectady Police, as documented in the media.  The former police chief charged with keeping drugs off the streets was actually running drugs into the city.  But hey, if he stops you and arrests and throws you in a cage for selling drugs, no biggie.  Because I should be conditioned to first believe those wearing the costume are "just all around nice guys".  If I first assume the person in the costume might be abusing his power, then I'm bitter and hate filled.  Got it.

and examples I gave are actual behaviors of Police that are seldom documented in the media
because it is not sensationalism and because they do these things because they want to and
not for the acclaim or publicity...again your mind just isn't wired that way.  Actually, I'm concluded that
your mind is not wired at all...short circuited is more like it.

Is that like the "Schenectady's Finest" that left his duty to go watch children bowl in Scotia?  Oh, his own kid

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Or...Schenectady Finest provides added security for gas station.  While getting paid overtime by the city and getting paid by gas station owner.

I'm actually in favor of a public safety opt out policy. I see that as a money saving option for the city. Anyone who chooses to opt out would have a blue sticker placed on their home and vehicle so the police and fire would know that the person had opted out. Additionally an opt out card would be issued to those individuals so should they be attacked robbed burned in a car accident and require medical assistance public safety personal wouldn't waste their time with rescue or aiding those persons.

The trickle down effect would be less time in courts and less time spent on prosecution of criminals thus saving money there. Also because fewer public safety personnel wold be needed taxpayers would see their bills go down. There would actually be less crime because the criminals would realize very quickly that it would make no sense to prey on those who were paying for public safety, and would therefore seek out those who were smart enough not to pay for it. Why take a chance on getting caught stealing a car for someone who pays for public safety when there are plenty of cars to steal from those who opted out.  Need a woman, heck just go to an opt out house and take your pick nobody cares.

There would have to be some mechanism in place that should a person who opted out suddenly decide they did want public safety as in say a fire should break out in their home and they'd like the fire dept. to extinguish the blaze, that would allow the 911 operator to politely respond with "I'm sorry sir but you're on the opt out list. You'll have to wait until next year, opt in and then we'll come put the fire out". Or should a police patrol notice a group of thugs beating the opt outer to a bloody pulp on his porch they could just drive on commenting "Meh he's an opt outer don't bother. Let's take 7 now".

Now the opt outers may indeed never need public safety assistance and that would work out well for all parties involved. Anyway just a thought. What say ye?

We should include for those that opt out, that they waive their rights should they be arrested and are not entitled to public
defender...must provide they own attorney.

Good point. Here's another hypothetical. Say the opt outer decides to arm himself to protect his property, and a perp invades his space and in the process , the perp is killed. Now if both the perp and the opt outer have opted out of public safety, no problem. It's a win win for all involved. One less criminal opt outer is justified in opting out and the city isn't involved on any level.

However should the perp have opted for public safety, then the slope gets slippery. He's entitled to justice, because he's an opt inner. The opt outer on the other hand is up sh*t creek without a paddle. He gets prosecuted, has to pay for his own lawyer, and if convicted to be fair  he or his family should have to pay for his own incarceration, or execution, should that be an option.

I say opting out of public safety is a viable alternative to paying those pesky taxes. Can I get a HELL YEAH!!!!!
