It's called supply and demand!!!

these stores are raking in the bucks!!!

Many many folks buy their kids school supplies, cleaning stuff, party stuff..etc//// and yes even food.
these stores do serve a purpose to some.

This thread is just another example of the nayboobs modus operandi.  They whine and complain like spoiled 2 year olds that nothing is being done to improve the neighborhoods.  Then, they whine and complain like spoiled 2 year olds when something - in this case a private business choosing to build a new store - is being done to improve a neighborhood.

The dollar stores are very smart- they sell stuff so cheap you can afford it.

Say you got a rusty nut ? you can get a pair of pliers for a dollar. Stuff is so cheap that you dont need to steel it. So inventory control - security  personnel cost  and bullet proof glass  are lower too.

Improve a neighborhood?   With junky processed food?   With toys containing lead?   With low wage jobs?

They are "disposable" pliers.  Use once and throw away.

OK, not literally, but close to it, stuff is so cheap quality, it won't last.

I would love it if there was a REAL market on Hamilton Hill. Why couldn't Golub or Walmart put a mini market here like the one at Mohawk Commons?

True, but while you will find junky processed food--whether at a supermarket chain or a local store like Gabriel's and Sal's) you WILL be able to by real food at the supermarkets.  You cannot buy real food at a dollar store.

Sure, you'll find toys with lead at a store like a Walmart or Kmart,  but you'll find more without them there

And any of these stores or other big box stores would locate in the Hill????  Doubtful.....and if they did,
then people would complain they cannot afford the higher prices.  At least the $ store affords them some
ability to buy some stuff and stay within their spending means.

PS - You should really shop the $ stores more and you might find they have a lot of decent stuff people
need, and they are in no way a "grocery" store so comparing them, to one is not realistic.

Dollar stores serve a purpose. Some survive and others don't. To be honest I was always a little reluctant to go into one, but my attitude has changed in that respect. That grill brush that Kmart, Sears, or Walmart is selling for nearly $8, I picked up 2 for $1 each 2 years ago I've still got one sitting next to my grill and I should be able to get another season out of it.  Gift wrap, packing materials, cards, kitchen utensils, mops, brooms, cleaning supplies. A buck. A jar of spices that might cost $5 at PC or Hannaford. A buck at a dollar store. Garden seeds going for $2.50/pkg elsewhere, $.50/pkg at the dollar store. Tupperware, glassware, knives, forks spoons. A buck.

I'm not going to do my grocery shopping there, but I'm not going to stick my nose up in the air with a disgusted look and say, oh dollar stores, only low-life welfare people shop there. The mc's and their ilk need to ditch their 20th century values and ideas and join the rest of us here in the new reality.

Oh, and I didn't realize that they had become experts in the consumer advocacy arena as well.

there are many many senior citizens that go to these stores.
most parents get their kids school supplies there.
it's not just about FOOD!
greeting cards and party supplies.
some have frozen food cases with name brand items for a BUCK!!
private businesses that think they can make a decent profit in an area....they will set up business there.
so for right now....it's a dollar store.
