Developer targets land near Times Union headquarters for big shopping center

An out-of-state developer is pursuing approval for a large shopping center on land in the town of Colonie, New York owned by the Hearst Corp. near the headquarters of its local newspaper, The Times Union. Hearst Corp. owns 30 acres at the address, according to information on file with the town. The property appears to be accessible from Old Maxwell Road and fronts the I-87 Northway near Exit 4.

Sources say one of the large buildings could be leased to Cabela's, a popular hunting, fishing and sporting goods chain that has been scouting sites in the area in recent years. "That's the rumor," said Michael Garry, attorney for the Colonie Zoning Board of Appeals, "but there was no confirmation."

Local real estate brokers said this morning Costco, a popular discount wholesale chain, is a possible tenant to fill the 150,000-square-foot building.

Cabela's is actually on shaky financial ground. Bass Pro shops have undercut them on a lot of fishing gear and there are other internet outlets offering the same wares at a lower price.

I'm not familiar with Cabela's.

I've heard many good things about Costco.

Notice, NOT coming to Schenectady.
