After enjoying the casino and harbor and other attractions at the Rivers Casino and Resort at Mohawk Harbor, future visitors would be able to unwind at the Courtyard Marriott hotel.
The Planning Commission Wednesday unanimously approved the site plan for the four-story facility that is part of the $450 million building project under construction at the former Alco property on Erie Boulevard.
The panel, however, delayed voting on lighting issues related to the hotel because the developer is still finalizing details on the issue.
BBL Hospitality will help run the upscale 124-room hotel that is an "ideal fit for this property especially with the casino," according to Dan Hershberg, a civil engineer and consultant on the Mohawk Harbor project.
"The goal would be to have people take advantage of retail uses and the casino," added Hershberg during his presentation about the project — a partnership between Rotterdam-based Galesi Group and Rush Street Gaming of Chicago. "It complements the area and gives you a nice first view of the site."
The hotel, which he described as a Courtyard prototype, will also feature a sitting area with a fire pit and outdoor furniture that is "intended to be a gathering space for guests." There will also be easy access to the harbor with a walkway from the hotel to the five-acre 50-boat slip marina.
The residential retail development also calls for more than 300 apartments and a second hotel linked to a150-room hotel that hasn't been publicly named.
The Courtyard Marriott's 125 parking spaces would be more than able to accommodate the 20-person staff since they will be working during the days when people are usually checking out, Hershberg said.
James Tripp with Rochester-based HBT architects said the hotel will be adorned with the familiar red-and-white illuminated "Courtyard" name, being 30 inches high and Marriott name at 25 inches.
Besides the lighting, Hershberg told the commission that their experts are still ironing out the landscaping details which were talked about in general terms.
"My guess is that there's going to be more trees than less trees," said Hershberg.
Commissioner Tom Carey asked Tripp about the hotel's energy efficiency and renewable energy to "help offset the impact of the project" on the environment. Tripp said they were talking with the state Energy Research and Development Authority about their options.
The team of professional experts is expected to return next month to the commission to present specifics about the 151,000-square-foot casino and will have to do the same for each of the individual buildings on the 60-acre parcel that Galesi owns.
The gambling hall would have 66 table games and 1,150 slot machines.

Not really sure how just posting an article from the Times Union without making any personal commentary justifies being personally attacked by a certain person(s). The fact is that the city planning commission approved the Courtyard by Marriot. People are free to think it is a good or a bad thing. However, the only personal commentary that I will make on the matter is this: Based on the artist renderings of the proposed hotel building, I would have pushed for a design and more landscaping around the building. The facade (as depicted in the artist's rendering) looks "blah" and it appears as if the blacktop comes right up to the building except for a teeny-tiny space for some teeny-tiny bushes. Given its proximity to the Stockade area, "Mohawk Harbor" should probably be designed to have a mix of facades (1680's to 1840's era architectural features -- Colonial, early American, Classic/Greek Revival) ... mimicking the historic architecture of the Stockade. The placement of green space and type of plantings used is also crucial. IMHO, a few tiny bushes in front of a cookie cutter generic commercial building is NOT good landscape design -- in the city or even here in town. We need to have BOTH building codes/standards and design/landscaping codes/standards.

You are comparing Vegas casinos that actually have to compete against other casinos in a city that is zoned for gambling, to ONE casino going into Schenectady, chosen by the NYS government, with no competition of other casinos within 50+ miles.
