We are not talking about states west of the Mississippi, we are talking about Rotterdam and its municipal water system...which until last year, was a $ 25 a year charge...it then tripled to avoid going above 2% on property taxes. If our total tax rate was even middle of the road for the rest of state, a metered water system might have merit, but its not... its one of the highest in the state...and in the Country. Usually when a municipality provides water, they also provide sewer...Rotterdam does not except for a very few. I've already spent $8000 on a rebuilt septic system because Rotterdam doesn't have sewers. I'll continue to pay $250 a year to get my system pumped out to keep it viable so I don't have to go through the process again.
For my tax dollars, Rotterdam doesn't provide much in services. The water meters can stay on the shelves.
I think you are mistaken about no sewers. Definitely not all areas, but there are sewers.
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!

I said VERY few have sewers, which is ABSOLUTELY accurate...

You stated that water was a municipal resource. It is a resource but it is NOT necessarily a municipal resource. That is why I posted the item about states west of the Mississippi where water is quite often supplied through PRIVATE companies and the trend towards privatizing water supplies is a growing one. So my post was quite relevant to the topic.
You state that municipalities often provide both water and sewer. Under New York State Law, only Cities are required to provide both water and sewer. Towns MAY provide water and/or sewer - through water districts and sewer districts -- but Towns are NOT required to provide those services. Towns aren't required to have a police department nor a fire department nor even a Receiver of Taxes. Technically, Towns are only required to have a Town Board, a Supervisor, a Town Clerk (who by law is the Receiver of Taxes unless a separate office is created) and a Superintendent of Highways. Towns don't even have to have a highway department -- they can contract that out to another municipality or the county.

Rotterdam is used to floating along on effluent.....hence our poor use of a comp plan, class, style, standard etc etc
Maybe you are used to floating along on effluent. That is up to you. However, I believe Rotterdam is a great place to live, work and do business --- with a lot of style and the best planning team around. As Tina Turner would say, we are "Simply the best -- better than all the rest."

I guess you think Hodge Podge zoning is a trait of the great planning team...

When I talk about our current weather, I don't talk about whats happening west of the Mississippi...I talk about what is relevant to this locale. Bottom line, in the town of Rotterdam, water is a municipal resource...period... In the town of Rotterdam, sewers exist for the very few..period... For homeowner in the town of Rotterdam, our total tax rate (including county) is among the highest in the state...period...
In the past year, the town tripled its water bill to homeowners, which in theory, should triple the amount of money going to the water department. The town also instituted a $50 lawn refuse fee...again, in theory, that should free up more money from the towns general fund since the fee should go exclusively to the department responsible for lawn waste pickup... I see no case for going to water meters and until I do, I remain opposed to it.

Are you drunk, this town with its basic lack of any style has the worst planning department in the area and maybe even the state. No where does spot zoning happen with more regularity. The town not only looks shoddy in its business to residential mix, but our main thoroughfares are clogged during each commute. New/growing businesses are allowed to be put in places where they only add to the chaos, and developments including MDU's are allowed to be built with out regard for the strain already on municipal services.
Listen.....ROTTENdam in the last few decades has added malls, mid-sized big box stores and multiple residential developments and multiple mfh units....which should make taxes LOWER....not HIGHER!!!
ROTTENdam has not added ANY new services in decades... so no additional costs there?
So why are taxes/fees going up??????
ANYBODY????
this should be a no-brainer folks!!

YOU BELIEVE...., well I believe you must have a serious mental problem.
Do you have a business in Rotterdam? Do you own any property in Rotterdam? The good, decent, hardworking people of Rotterdam are tired of not getting any value from all the taxes and fees we pay each year.
Even Tina Turner saw a problem with the way things were and eventually left Ike.
