I never said anything about Rotterdam Square being obsolete based on trends. If that site can't be expanded to an A mall, and the market does not support a smaller mall, it certainly  isn't going to support mixed use crap, and anyway, if a proposed use is bad for the aquifer, it wouldn't be legally permitted for that site, now would it?

I'm sure that was a *tic*......right.....

it's been ruined along with our infrastructure.....

Rotterdam is like an old barn falling apart......even as it is 'rebuilt' and I use that in a sarcastic tone, it will be at the will of
the $$ grabbers and lack of style/future planning......

I'm pointing out that there are already some restrictions for that site on the books. Not for a minute do I think we are really minding the store, environment-wise.
I noticed a couple years back, someone had used one of those chemlawn type treatments on the islands in the parking lots. That stuff gets in ground water, I'm told.

I went by the mall this afternoon.

Macy's had people standing on Campbell rd at Burdeck St with giant 20-40% off clearance signs.

There were a couple more down by the mall.

The parking lot was packed all the way out to the road.

The new Stewart's on Balltown and Nott is a great location -- however - I think they "shoe-horned" it in there and don't have enough parking spaces for the volume of business.

NOT Unlike the DD expansion on Curry and Helderberg with the new drive through that causes traffic backups and near misses each day because the lot is not sufficient for the "Volume of Business". The old adage applies here “People in glass houses (or those who allow others to build them) should not throw stones”.

YUP......the economy sucks big time ALL OVER THE COUNTRY!!!
and don't let GOV ALMIGHTY tell ya any different.
Schenectady is absolutely no different than any other city/town that lost their main means of employment.
no one has disposable cash anymore.

In that case, I am glad that I had nothing to do with the DD expansion on Curry and Helderberg with the new drive through.  I reiterate, the new Stewart's on Nott and Balltown was poorly planned -- too few parking spaces and bad traffic flow.

The site that Rotterdam Square Mall is built on is a good location for commercial use.  Perfectly situated between the city, the main part of Rotterdam and Rotterdam Junction while, also, being easily accessible to surrounding and distant consumers via I-90, I-890, I-88 and, even, I-87 (via the other interstates mentioned).  It did great business for a number of years and, if it had the right tenants, mix of uses and marketing, it could do great business again.

I am optimistic that the mall will be re-invented, re-developed and re-marketed to the benefit of ALL.

If it weren't for Schalmont School..............I88 would be the BEST location for development.

Personally, I think that we should redevelop underutilized properties closer to the urban core BEFORE developing currently undeveloped property around the perimeter or in the rural areas.

Plus, the mall property has utilities including a sewer line.  Route 7 by Schalmont doesn't have sewer lines now and probably won't have them for a long time.
