Surprisingly - When Filene's was operating in Rotterdam Square Mall, that store did very well (at least for the first 7 years .. 1995 to 2002) and outperformed company sales expectations continuously. I personally know for a fact that the Rotterdam Filene's store had one of the highest sales and profits per square foot of all the May Department stores (Filene's, Kauffman, Robinson-May, Foley's, et all) and one the May Company's CEO cup at least twice - and possibly 3 times. The Filene's at Crossgates (once it moved rom the north side to the larger store on the west side of that mall) was always under-performing. I personally know for a fact that some departments at the Rotterdam Square Filene's beat the same department at Crossgate's Filene's sales figures on a consistent basis.
Personally, I don't think that Macy's gave a damn about the Rotterdam store -- it had "come along with the package" when Federated Department Stores bought out May Department store. But that is the past and we have to move forward.
I have said before that shopping malls are obsolete. In the short term, only "destination malls" will have any chance and who knows how long that trend will hold on. Macy's closing at Rotterdam Square Mall is interesting -- because the store and a portion of the parking lot are owned by Federated Department Stores and are technically separate from the rest of the Mall. I think it is time to completely redevelop the Rotterdam Square Mall property -- I think some type of mixed use residential, hotel, retail and office complex would be the way to go. As for the portion owned by Federated Department Stores -- the question is -- will Federated open a different store in that location, will the owners of the rest of the Mall purchase that piece of property or will some other entity purchase that piece of property?

Who can blame them. The mall is dead. You can walk the whole mall on a regular basis and not run into other people. Losing Macy's will mean the end of that place. K-mart and Sear's are draws anymore--they're dieing chains themselves.
MACY'S is the only store we ever went to at that mall. And I agree......this is just the beginning of the end. And I also agree with grahambonnet......I thought the casino was going to encourage economic growth!!! Instead we see businesses/malls closing and moving out!

brick and mortar stores will be disappearing in numbers......there will not be store after store after store to go to......we will have to travel to make it a destination to shop at any 'big store'.....
the future is here along with the internet/amazon/fedex/ups.......
the only stores that will pop up every where like measles are the 'dollar stores' and specialty stores.....and even then it will be limited...
soon the cell phone stores will disappear as services consolidate.....
there will be empty buildings again....

They can't be 'that' obsolete since colonie center keeps expanding and crossgates is flourishing. First it's LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!! Schenectady County is over taxed and under serviced and is supported with tax dollars! Why didn't RSM expand like Colonie? Why would businesses one mile away for a 'promising casino' close NOW? Casinos are a money maker for the government/policiticans....especially in NYS. If a 'private business' thought it was a wise investment to stay or expand....they would have....like they did in Colonie. It just keeps getting worse....NOT better!

Colonie Center was on the verge of closing about a decade ago -- until new owners came in and transformed it into a "destination mall" -- Crossgates was built as a "destination mall" although the townof Guilderland squashed the mall owner's plans to fully realize their plans which included a hotel and other features.
Rotterdam Square Mall is a GREAT location -- if it were redeveloped into a "destination mall"-- although I think the mixed use approach would be better. I can tell you from my experience that we had customers who traveled 50-60 miles from the southwest (along I-890), the west (I-90) and north (Routes 5s and 30) to shop at Filene's. And these were regular customers.
Macy's stores are two levels and usually more than 110,000 square feet. Macy's never really was interested in the Rotterdam store -- their efforts were focused on the store in Colonie Center and elsewhere. So -again - I was absolutely NOT surprised to hear that Macy's was closing the Rotterdam store -- the writing has been on the wall for several years.
Interestingly, Filene's built that store with the potential to add a 2nd story later. The spot where the elevators would have gone in and the escalators were worked into the original plan -- also the steel support structure was built in such a way that they could eventually build higher.

What I've read is Shopping town has changed hands several times with promises of investments, but all talk and nothing happening....sound like Rotterdam mall????

Most of the people I went to school with that came from middle class, upper middle class, or wealthy families either moved out of state, or moved out of the county. The Schenectady economic problems are demographics, not the right type of retail stores.

No, according to DVOR, Macy's doesn't have the correct floor plan, probably not a two story Macy's and not located in a "destination mall". It has nothing to do with the surrounding area not able to afford the higher end designer products they sell.
You can do your own study. Go to Rotterdam mall and walk around K Mart and get a general idea how many people are in the store. Then go to Macy's and get a general idea how many people are in that store. Then make a judgement based on those general numbers of which store has more foot traffic. If there are more in KMart, is it because their store has a better floor plan, or is it the prices of their merchandise?
