It's crumbling.  Went by the place today, it's the side that faces Broadway.  Guess the taxpayers will be the ones to pay the repair bills.

I don't get it. All this new work, free government money paying for it, and still it is sub-par. I would have expected top of the line, but I guess when there is free money involved, they can't resist cutting themselves an even bigger slice of pie by taking shortcuts.

It was crumbling months ago, whoever "repaired" that side did a shi*ty job.  Maybe the same company that did the DSS building on Broadway?
Also from what I've heard the food and service is not good there at all, a shame.

The other day - was at a restaurant downtown with some friends.

A younger woman - in her late 20s...  Does not own property, although she is an established professional, intelligent, and articulate.

(My point about property is that normally I would think she would not be connected to what is going on with downtown versus the rest of the city...  In fact she's new to the area, only been here maybe 2.5 years.)

Somehow MR came up, and she mentioned how disappointing that whole thing ends up being...  That everyone was making such a big deal out of it coming, and it turns out to be a complete fiasco.  It was in context of the casino is coming, but if you look beyond the small pockets of success, that overall things are not good in this area economically or in the neighborhoods.

I'm not down on MR, hopefully they are around in 1 year, and I'll try again to get in there.  (Only time I tried was on a weekend, great weather, had an hour wait)

I just found it interesting that someone who I thought would be disconnected from the "developments" in Schenectady would have accurately assessed that not all is well.

Fact - the Mexican Radio project was financed with over $3,000,000 in PRIVATE MONEY and about $300,000 in Metroplex funding.   Any elementary school student would tell you that based on the FACTS and simple mathematics that the project was NOT entirely built with taxpayer money.  They would also say that whoever is saying otherwise is an ignorant fool and/or an outright liar.

One of the cooks told me they are still struggling to break even every month.

He said they came in large numbers when they first opened, but the customers stopped coming in for $18 burritos.

You forgot to mention that they are also currently fully tax exempt for the entire $2.4 million assessed value.

So, $3 1/2 million invested, and struggling to stay afloat even without having to pay any property taxes.

Metroplex should probably give them another million, that should make it a success.

First, I stand corrected.  Metroplex only put in $200,000 and not $300,000 into the Mexican Radio project.  That is far less than remaining cost of the project which was paid for by PRIVATE INVESTMENT and NOT taxpayer dollars as the lying nayboobs would have you believe.
"When the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority announced a year ago the details of Mexican Radio's move to downtown Schenectady, it highlighted some financial aspects of the restaurant's project — such as its $3 million price tag and the $200,000 Metroplex would provide for building renovations."  (from the Times Union)

Second, Mexican Radio will start paying a P.I.L.O.T. in year 4 of its operation.  The P.I.L.O.T. will be 50% of the property tax bill and will increase 5% every year until it reaches 100%.  Which means that a) Mexican Radio WILL BE PAYING TAXES and, more importantly, 3 buildings in our central business district that were literally on the verge of collapse have been stabilized, renovated/redeveloped and house a functioning business.  That seems like a pretty good deal to me.  I  haven't noticed the lying nayboobs bothering to invest even a penny of their own money downtown or anywhere.
"A Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement between Metroplex and Mexican Radio calls for the restaurant to pay no taxes for three years. In the fourth year, the restaurant will pay 50 percent of its property tax bill, with the amount increasing in 5 percent increments until the bill reaches 100 percent in 2026, said Ray Gillen, Metroplex chairman."

Third, it is interesting that the lying nayboobs have suddenly shifted the topic of this thread away from their deliberate and indefensible lie.  But then that is the kind of behavior everyone expects from a low down, no good nayboob.

It was a flop DVOR, the reviews of this location speak for itself, as sanfordy said they won't last.

Place is beautiful inside and out. Decor is amazing. Great atmosphere. Waitress was really super nice. We really enjoyed how big and nice the place looked
There is 3 of us, 2 adults and 1 child(9).  Tacos for me, wife got enchiladas, taco for daughter. Ordered the chips and salsa. Drinks includes "the Mac", dos Equis, and lemonade.
The food came quickly and was very good. Ordered more chips to go with our dinner. They have a sauce called Habanero and Mango sauce that was amazing.
Our one complaint was the price. Over $65 for the 3 of us not including tip. Not only had to pay for the chips but also a refill on the chips. Seemed kinda piddly.  We could have went to Bomber or some other place comparable for half cost. We may be paying for the cost of the building and decor instead of the food.
The food was very good and the atmosphere is pretty amazing.

We went here for my gf's bday with a group of about ten. I was excited when I first heard they were building a Mexican Radio nearby because I'd heard alot of great things about the other location in Hudson. Then when the bad reviews started popping up I lost interest. But we decided to give it a shot with low expectations.

Our waitress was nice but a complete scatterbrain. The prices are ridiculously high and the service was soooo slow. When the main dishes finally came out half of them were cold and arrived about 10 mins apart. Sounds like either poor management in the kitchen or the waitress didn't put the order in right. I wasn't impressed by my tacos but my gf really liked her enchiladas (once they remade them and they were hot). To make up for the service and cold food they offered us all dessert which was pretty impressive and probably the best part of the meal. It seems like most of the complaints on here are about the lack of free chips and salsa, high prices, and slow service. All of which can easily be corrected if they want to succeed.

Upsides: Decor is great (bright colors, old fashioned doors, grand staircase, lots of ironwork), lots of room - like others said, the place is huge. There's patio seating. Servers are friendly. Lime-infused sour cream is very tasty. Lots of vegan and vegetarian options. Food portions are a good size.

Downsides: The service IS slow - which may  be because it is such a big place. You have to pay for chips & salsa (red salsa so mild as to be bland, green had some heat but very roughly chopped so there were large pieces of onion and tomatillo in ours). Food was ok - expected a little bit more innovative flavors for the price. My chimichanga was hot but the beans/rice were just warm.

We walked in to a somewhat empty first level, however we were lead upstairs to a very empty second level, except for one other lone family with children. Oh did I mention that my wife and I had our baby with us. Maybe it was just coincidence, but there were no families on the first level. Moments after we sat down I saw what I thought was a bird fly overhead, wait no it was a bat flying in and out of the kitchen. Needless to say we did not stick around to order any food.

Food is ridiculously spicy! Couldn't finish my guacamole or fajitas. Really disappointed in that.
Service was exceptional! Tamara really helped us out and was super friendly. She earned her herself a gold star along with a great tip for her friendly, conscientious service. And the margaritas are awesome. Just need to lay off the jalapeno,  not every Mexican food is an endurance challenge.

Well, they have been open for just over a month now and enough negative reviews have been written already that the owners should have identified any, if not all, of the areas that need improvement.  With that in mind, we decided that a Wednesday lunch was in order for us.  We have only been to the Hudson location once before and that was probably about 10 years ago.  I would actually like to see more reviews by the people who have recently been to both locations and their comparisons.

We arrived at 1:40 pm after a 2 block walk from a parking lot that offers the first 2 hours free.  Just like many others, we were impressed with how nice the renovations were to the building and how large the space was.  It was not very busy, maybe 5 tables were filled, a few people at the front bar, and we could see some people upstairs.  We were promptly greeted by a young lady who asked us to wait for the hostess.  That took about 1 minute and we were then seated at a table for two and given menus.  Our server arrived a few minutes later with glasses of water and asked if we were interested in anything else to drink.  After answering a couple of our questions about the beers and margaritas, we ordered a pint of Saranac IPA ($6) and a Jalapeno Margarita ($10).

Our drinks arrived after about 5 minutes and we were ready to order our food.  I'm mentioning the timing of everything because I've read so many comments about slow service.  One of the menus they offer between 11:30am and 3:30pm on weekdays is a $12 Express Lunch.  Both of us chose selections from this menu.  My wife ordered the Dos Baja Fish Tacos (yes, $12) - two soft corn tortillas with batter-fried tilapia, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, guacamole, Baja crème, and spicy arbol salsa.  On the positive side, the tacos were also served with a small side-salad for which my wife chose the house dressing.  This salad was not mentioned on the menu and the dressing was very good.  The guacamole was just ok, nothing special, nor as good as my wife makes.  The disappointing element of the tacos was that the fish had a bit of an oily flavor from being fried.  We've never encountered fried fish in tacos anywhere else, it's always been steamed or baked, so that was a surprise to us.

I ordered a selection of two items from the Boca Sampler ($12): the Radio Nachos - four corn tortilla wedges, topped with my choice of black frijoles, melted cheese, smoky guajillo pepper sauce and crema; and the Mexican Spring Rolls - a mix of corn, mushroom, carrots, poblano peppers and cilantro, rolled in rice paper with guacamole and Boston lettuce, and a small ramekin of raspberry-chipotle peanut sauce.  My Sampler also included a Mini Chips and Salsa sampler.  I can see where the word "Nachos" can be misleading to anyone who has ordered "Nachos" elsewhere.  The dish here is not that pile of chips smothered in toppings and cheese that you can share with the rest of your party while still ruining your appetite for an entrée.  It's more of a tasting, and a very nice tasting at that.  The Spring Rolls are uniquely different and good even without the raspberry-chipotle peanut sauce.  The serving of chips and salsa that came with my sampler was much larger than I expected after having read the comments of others who had purchased theirs as a separate appetizer.  The red salsa had a little kick to it that took some time to build up.  The green salsa had more spiciness as you got to the bottom of the ramekin.  There were three additional bottles of sauces on our table if you chose to use them, and one was made in the Hudson Valley.  I also saw a wall shelf filled with many different bottles of spices that you could probably choose to sample.

Overall, I would say we had good food and very nice service.  We did not have to go looking for our server Derek to get our check.  He was there to check on us during our meal and was ready with our bill as we finished our chips and salsa and decided we were too full for dessert.  Staff could keep a closer eye on cleaning up, however.  While the table tops were being cleaned as soon as a table became vacant, there was also a floor area that had a spill and pieces of carrot and lettuce that the staff kept walking over.  The prices may be a bit on the higher side, but the atmosphere is probably worth something too.  Finally, we were on our way out with an acceptable experience and a pleasant farewell from the staff after a total of 70 minutes.  Even the parking attendant wished us a good day!

Awful. Don't waste your money. We waited (and waited) in the coldest restaurant I've ever been in for what seemed like an hour for inedible food (Plantains Rellenos) that was sent back twice. Overpriced for what is offered and you pay for chips and salsa. Wish we'd just gone to Bombers.

HANDS DOWN, THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN THE CAPITAL REGION! There was a little bit of a wait and the food is kind of pricey, but it was well worth it in our opinion. Our server, Kandi, was super nice and very attentive. Margaritas and food were top notch. We'll definitely be going back.

Oh, and they most certainly DID have rice.

First, I really liked Mexican Radio in Hudson and was looking forward to the Schenectady restaurant opening.  It was a fail.  The food was not good, and we made the mistake of sitting outside, until a very long train rolled by at the speed of molasses flowing uphill in winter.   Conversation was impossible for at least 30 minutes, and the food was just not good -- actually awful -- nothing like the meals I've had at the Hudson location.  My sense is that the place is too large, and I don't know how it can survive.

this was bad on every account! the food, OMG! Tacos are dry and bland - the shrimp tacos were overcooked cut up pieces of shrimp in a soft shell drizzled with cilantro - no tomatoes, lettuce, cheese - awful! My partner had steak and spiced beef - the same dry! the service was rude - we had 1 beer, 1 soda, both had tacos, and we paid for chips $60 and after we left had a second dinner (we do not have big appetites)
I would advise anyone considering to rethink - this restaurant will not be successful if it does not offer something soon like good food for a good price with good service - all lacking

Went with a group of 8, were seated immediately. From the time that we ordered, we waited 45 min for our food. I detest any mexican restaurant that makes you pay for chips and salsa. Cost $16 for the "grande" plate that 3 tiny plates of salsa and guacamole. Waitress brought out a small bowl of chips for our large group. Had to repeatedly beg for her to bring out more chips. Took an hour and a half for the waitress to refill my water.

Each dish was priced $15-20. Dishes were small especially for mexican food standards. Rice and beans were terrible. Rice was not fully cooked. Our dishes had no flavor.  The corn tortillas tasted like old dish rags.  Would never return here. No way these guys will be in business 6 months from now. Huge let down, had high hopes because everyone always raves about the one in Hudson. Had a similar experience at that location, food at least was mediocre, but service was horrendous.

Great atmosphere and better food.

My wife just recently started working in the area, so we came here to grab a quick bite to eat one night. I wasn't expecting it to be a big deal, but the place is impressively enormous. We were seated in the back room, which like the rest of the place, was well decorated.

I started with the house margarita, which to my surprise, ended up being one of the best I've ever had. For entrees we ordered the Huevos Rancheros and the Cajun Burrito. I was surprised by the high prices as most Mexican restaurants tend to be on the lower side, but after tasting the food I understood why; it was fantastically delicious. My burrito was served smothered in a tomato based pepper sauce that was not at all too spicy and filled with flavor. My wife's Huevos Rancheros were just the same, full of flavor.

The service was standard here, nothing to write home about. What impressed me most was the grandeur and potential of the establishment. Again, it is huge. With two bars and an additional bar upstairs with seating (can be used for private events and on busier nights), I'm sure Mexican Radio can have a fantastic bar scene. There is also a large outdoor seating area adjoining the back bar section.

I will definitely be back, as I would like to try more from their menu and check out the scene on a Friday night.

My friends really wanted to try this Mexican Radio after having loved the one in Hudson. However, we were disappointed. The atmosphere was fine, but had a chain-like feel to it. One person in my group described it as "very DIsney".

The food was unremarkable. No one had any specific complaints (I was with a group of about 12 people), but no one raved, either. I had the taco salad with grilled shrimp. It was a lot of romaine lettuce, a few cut veggies (tomato, pepper, etc.), a few chunks of avocado, dressing, a small handful of tiny shrimp and loads of shredded cheese. It was spicy, which was fine, except that I couldn't really taste any distinct flavors -- just spiciness. Also, it was sitting on a bed of chips, rather than in a taco shell bowl, so I found it a little awkward to eat.

Finally, the service was *slow*. The server, Melissa, was lovely. Very sweet and accommodating. However, our party was seated by 7:45 and our dinners weren't served until nearly 10pm. There were very few tables full that night and almost no one at the bar. We arrived for a 7:30 reservation and didn't leave until about 11.

It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't hurry back.

Food was disappointing. First, I hate that chips and salsa are not complimentary.  Then, the entrees were ridiculously expensive (20 dollars for a burrito?!?) and came out in tiny portions. The side of rice and beans was mushy and practically inedible.  The entrees themselves were ok but certainly not worth the price.

That being said, staff was friendly and attentive and the space/decor was kind of fun. I might go back sometime for drinks/light appetizers only.

Went here for the $12 express lunch yesterday. This was my first time at any Mexican Radio. I loved the atmosphere; open floor plan and lots of space between tables. The ladies room was nice too!

I ordered the fish tacos which came with a side salad or rice/beans. The rice/beans had great flavor but could've been hotter. The tacos were delicious, but the soft corn tortillas fell apart I had to eat them with a knife and fork. My friend had the mini burrito with pulled pork. I had a bite and it was delicious also.

I do agree that the dinner and drink prices are high for Mexican food in Schenectady. But a $12 lunch isn't bad. Looking forward to trying more things on the menu.

I are here for dinner on a Saturday night while we were in town. This place was one of the only somewhat full places in the town so we decided to pop in for mexican food.

First, I was blown away by the prices. In a bad way. I have never seen 3 tacos cost $18 no matter what they look like. I didn't order them.
The loaded nachos were great, though just nachos. We also had a side salad that was fresh and the radio wraps which were tasty.
The four of us split three appetizers and drinks and the bill was $72. That's a little crazy and overpriced for what the experience was. It's nice. But you definitely pay for it and, to me, it's not worth it.

I waited on trying this restaurant because I did not want to deal with the opening hype  I called to make a reservation,  I was told reservations were full for the evening but walk ins were welcome. She even mentioned there was no wait.  When we arrived there was one couple checking in. I gave my name and was told there would be a short wait..... which turned into 30 minutes.  It looked like tables were available. Seemed suspicious.

Now for the food. Overpriced for sure. Portions very small. Chorizo app was decent. Chicken soup lacked salt.... too earthy. Chicken Enchiladas were bad. Flavor less chicken and sauce. Corn tortillas were so bad, barley edible. My wife ordered Paella which was 20 dollars. Too much tomato 4 measly shrimp and had no seafood taste. The portion was insulting small for poorly executed paella.  The chef needs a smack upside the head for this dish.

On a positive note: Ambiance is very cool, the rice and beans were tasty and I enjoyed the blood orange margarita.

First...service was slow, was asked if I want a drink and the waitress took the order and then walked around cleaning tables etc. for ever it seemed, like all I came for was the drink. I eventually flagged her down and ordered food. That being said, when I did get food, it was good. Although the chips  and salsa were not complimentary as is in my experience the norm, they were worth the $3. I had a steak burrito, it was very good, house salad was ok, but on a tiny plate, hard to eat without spilling all over the table. All in all, I enjoyed my experience here.

Went back again over the weekend and we were not disappointed. We had a few margaritas, the mac & cheese, Mexican rolls, and guacamole dip. Everything was quite delicious, and also unique. The building itself is awesome, they did a really great job fixing it up. Having 3 bars spread out around the place allows for a short wait to get a drink.

Keep in mind, this place is huge, and they have a large staff. It is going to take a few months for everyone to get in their groove, and everything to be consistent across the board. Give it a few chances, stop complaining, and be more open minded.

Basically a drinks and appetizer/guacamole  place with a great setting and vibe.  It's a wannabe Cheesecake Factory for Mexican food but not quite.

The entrees are horrible pretty much and to be avoided.  The frozen margaritas are enjoyable as are many of the appetizers.  Not sure what's up with the entrees but basically overpriced dog food.  And entrees is what requires cooking skill, the other stuff can be done by ex-cons and losers.  And this is why many restaurants can't get their entrees right, but the easy stuff they can do.

The flan was very good and the best part of the meal for my party.

You want to like this place because it looks nice, it's spacious with multiple bars, young servers in black outfits, but the food just isn't there -- and certainly not at its current price point.

The check should be about 40% lower for the quality of the food.

Sadly, I have no plans in the near future to return.   Maybe if reviews indicate things have turned around in a year I'll give it a try.

Four adults and a baby for an early lunch.

Sat outside which was surprisingly nice.

Sangria was tasty. Fairly good draft beer selection. Interesting Margherita flavors that I will return to try.

Two in the party order burritos that they were disappointed with. They are not at all what one would think of as a burrito. They looked more like enchiladas, really. One ordered fish tacos and was able to get them baked instead of fried. I ordered the enchiladas, which were delicious. We did find the ingredients overall to be fresh. Fried ice cream was yummy!

All the meals seemed small for the price. We did not order off the special lunch menu, either. The enchiladas at other restaurants such as El Mariachi are at least double the size for about the same price, if not less.

I hope the restaurants makes some minor changes to get better reviews.

I for one would like to seem them succeed in Schenectady.

My family and I were here on a Saturday night before a show at Proctor's. I have to say we were all pleased with the attentive, quick service and the food. I was a little put off that we had to buy the chips and the salsa, but after tasting them and seeing how fresh they were, it was worth it. I will definitely return here. I think it was bonus having a place like this in Schenectady.

Beautiful place. The first time I came here the kitchen was close so I didn't get to experience the food. Then last night was my first time to try their food. Went to bar with friends and the bartender too forever and there were only 4 other people there. Really!! They have 3 bars maybe they need to keep one and add more staff. Anyways, the food took forever for a very slow night and didn't give us chips and salsa. When she did gave us chips and salsa my food was on the way. A little too late on that. Manu was to overwhelming. I been eaten Mexican food everywhere around the United state this top the weird menu. I had the chimichanga it wasn't great. It was filled with too much cheese and less meat and veg and it's not worth $19.00 really!? What ever at least I tried it. I will come here to drink but not t eat unless it's just appetizer.

Kitchen is under staff; therefore, the wait on tables takes awhile. Being that the kitchen is understaff the preparation and quality of the food is affected. For example, dry chicken or wrong seasoning requested. Aside from food, drinks are overpriced, specifically frozen margaritas; however, very delicious. This place will turn around, I believe in it.

Would like to add if anyone at Mexican Radio read these...stage and tiki bar outside! Do it up.

I've waited a week before doing this review to see if my feelings might change somewhat as I don't think I've ever posted a poor review on yelp.  I also had waited to check this place out to let things quiet down a bit after the opening and also give them time to "work the kinks out".
As I approached the entrance walking East, I noticed the outdoor dining on my left... it was a beautiful day so outside for a late lunch was a "no brainer" (it was Sunday and 3:30ish),
First impression upon entering is very positive; "someone spent a lot of $$ on fixing up this place" was my initial thought.  It's a big place - beautiful staircase - 2 bars, NICE.
the restaurant was not crowded, but  between inside and outside, there were at least 20-30 people dining and drinking.
We were seated outside and were given menus.  We had no way of knowing is was going to be All downhill from there.
Our server, attractive, friendly young lady... we didn't see much of her as she was not available very much.  A few questions about the menu and food preparation .... IE:  my dining partner asked "what's Seitan" (an option on a dish he was considering).. she gave a totally wrong explanation.  Asked about a substitution she said "can't do that"... but, to her credit, after taking our order she returned and said "we CAN do that" if you would like.
I wish I could post a photo of my $20 Cajun burrito so you could see all the grease that continually oozed out onto my plate.  I had to push my food to one side so it wouldn't be sitting in it... a separate plate would have been one solution, if there were only someone to bring me one; or if someone would have circled back to our table to ask "how is your meal?" or something.  the flavor wasn't bad (I guess because the flavor is in the FAT, which this had plenty of)...but I'd NEVER order it again!
My friends meal was also "unremarkable".
Server later explained that its a really busy time due to 4pm shift change, and people working doubles and she went on with some ridiculous explanation for the very poor service.
the food and service were so poor that I cannot bring myself to give 2 stars just for the beautiful place and brining the jobs to Schenectady.
I was told also that the owners got $$ from Metroplex or other "OPM" (other peoples money)... I don't know about this, but I don't see going back there again;  if in the area and I want mexican, I guess Bombers will have to do.
BTW, if the food had been good and the service also good, I wouldn't mind the $20 burrito one bit!
I hope the fix the food and service... if they do, this could be a really neat place in Schenectady (I drove there from home in Rexford)

First of all,  I so wanted to like this place.   The building is really cool looking and we had been anticipating the opening.   Unfortunately,  we were disappointed on all counts.  The service was extremely slow/poor.  The food..what can I say.  My beef tasted like over cooked 2 day old pot roast.  The shrimp was extremely overcooked.  The portions were almost comical.   Especially the kids portions.  We were extremely disappointed.

This place sucked! Epic failure in many levels.  Wait was 30 mins, no complementary chips and salsa, corn tortillas were stale tasting, stinky and cold- really disgusting,  time for food 15-20 mins, ordered paella which came in a bowl the size of a small saucer with too much tomato sauce,  4 tiny shrimp and 2 slices of chorizo for $20! And half Cooked fried plantains which had to be sent back. Husband ordered tripple chicken enchiladas, chicken was tastless, could have passed for a newspaper.  Appetizers are over prized 1 corn cob for $8, guacamole $12 and so on. Overpriced food for low quality in my opinion.  Not coming back. On a positive note,  ambiance atmosphere,  server was professional, rice and beans ok

If everything on the menu was as lovely as the decor the place would be a mega hit.  Our server Justin was good, we didn't wait long for anything (he did forget that I gave him my cc and presented the bill at the table).  Chips and salsa were OK but for the price they charge I expected more.  Salsa was so mild no heat at all, but you can add some if you like.  I had the Enchilada's with raspberry mole.  I did very much enjoy the mole and the stuffing in the enchiladas was tasty but the enchilada was dry as cardboard, I just pushed it aside.  My dining companions like their entrees but were not overly impressed.  For dessert we had the flan and the banana chocolate chimichunga.  I haven't had flan in quite some time, it was good but quite dense.  Overall I would go back for drinks and apps, and would consider a private party in the function room.  The bill came to 98 plus tip for three (3 beers-chips & salsa-3 entrees and 2 desserts).

I'm sorry, you said the chips aren't free?  What the hell is that?  I'm no legal scholar but I think that might be illegal.  HUGE, H-U-G-E, downgrade for that alone.

I thought the prices were steep, the decor had potential, but was ultimately lacking (I asked them if they were waiting for more tables and chairs to arrive.  My waitress said, no.  So there you have the answer to that).  The portions were small.  The  guacamole was something like $12.  Stop the madness people.  I make guac every week.  Sometimes avocados are costly but not this time of year.  Guac should at least be charged by the Market Price like lobster is.  So guac is avocado, garlic, lime and cilantro.  Salt.  It takes 3 minutes to make.  We aren't talking about truffles, folks.  Cut it out.  None of those ingredients warrant that cost.  And restaurants get their goods for less than we can at a local market.  If you go and want guacamole, stop by mi casa first and I will make some for you.  I will charge you $5 for a huge bowl.  I asked for a side of guacamole and I promise you I am not lying when I say it was a thimble full.  You know the free samples you get at the self-serve frozen yogurt places?  Yeah, well it was one of those paper cups.  $2.75.

The flavors were interesting and more complex than you average Mexican place but the pros don't outweigh the cons for me.  And in Schenectady?  Hahahaha.  You've got to be kidding.

Went for lunch with a large party. Service was less than attentive; it's easy to be forgotten in such a cavernous, dark space, even with a party of 8. Water glasses ran dry, hard to get the check, order problems...

The $12 express menu doesn't have anything interesting to me, so I ordered off the main menu. Most of our group also ignored the $12 menu. Three mole enchiladas were delicious... once my order finally came. Even then, I had to send back my dish, due to being cold in the middle. The non-melted cheese should be a hint that their heating strategy isn't working. Even when it came back, it wasn't hot. They seem to put plates in a hot place, which can't penetrate the center of the dish as effectively as nuking.

Yum, their moles are just as good at this location as at the Hudson location. But oops, they didn't have one of the three I ordered.

I can't imagine why they thought this many tables and these price points would succeed in the capital region. I'll go once every couple years, if this business survives, for a special occasion dinner, but not with any regularity. I prefer the quaint conviviality of the Hudson location, rather than this huge space. The ambiance in Hudson supports this price point better than Schenectady.

PS: Found free on-street parking around the corner on Erie Blvd.

Average Mexican food. First visit for lunch with my mom. We both ordered off from the Express Lunch menu which was $12 per person. I had the 2 hard tacos: beef and steak with a very small salad with their lime tequila dressing. Very average. Something I could throw together at home. Not impressed, but edible. Just nothing spectacular. Service was very good for lunch on a Friday which was a plus. My mom had a sampler of nachos and quesadillas which she thought was good but not great. All around... Average at best. You want authentic Mexican take out with tacos, tamales and tostadas??? Go to La Mexicana Grocery on State St in Schdy, which is mostly a small Mexican grocery store. Look on Yelp at the reviews. You will not be disappointed. Some seriously great authentic Mexican food.. But with no bells n whistles.

The pros: The building is fantastic. Three bars and the interior is beautiful. That's the good news.
The cons: The prices are high. The Steak Fajitas I ordered were $20 and I got about five pieces of steak. The taste was overpowered by the spice. My mouth was still tingling an hour after eating. I will never understand why any restaurant has to over power the taste of food with spicy seasoning. I realize that this is Mexican food, but I've eaten at several Mexican establishments and they were very good. The other issue I had with the Fajitas is most places when you order them you can hear the sizzle around the building. While the food was hot, there was no sizzle.
The wait (and I do mean WAIT) staff: I was at the third bar which had five people, including me, sitting at it. I was greeted promptly, but that was the only thing that was prompt.
I doubt I'll return unless they turn down the heat in the food and turn up the attention of the wait staff.

Decided to try out the new location of MR tonight. We arrived around 8:25pm (Sunday night). Walked past the patio on the way in and saw many open tables, so we decided we'd ask for a seat outside for dinner. When we went inside and requested a table on the patio, we were told that there was a wait to be seated - for both inside and outside tables. We looked around and could clearly see empty tables all around. We reluctantly put our name down on the "list," then decided to take a walk upstairs to check out the second floor. When we got to the top of the stairs we saw that the ENTIRE second floor was completely EMPTY. Not one table was occupied.

All in all, there were probably 5-6 occupied tables outside on the patio and a few occupied on the first floor inside. That's it. We told the hostess there was no way we were going to wait for a table when there were empty tables all throughout the place (at 8:30 on a Sunday night). We left. I now see tons of similar reviews here on Yelp. What the hell is going on at this place?? I hope they are able to get their sh*t together.

Mexican Radio
Server:  Rachelle
Table: 3 Guests
The following are out of 5 Points and reflect August's experience.
* (5) Customer Service - Meaning how well they assisted me in my needs.
I called Mexican Radio Friday evening to place my reservations for our group. They handled it quickly and pleasantly. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were seated swiftly by the head waitress and given water. We even had the option of sitting outside or inside, since 2/3s of the party was cold, we opted for sitting outside much to my distaste due to insects. When it came time to paying we asked our server, Rachelle, to split our bill and she was more than happy to do so.
* (4) Decor - The atmosphere of the place.
I remember when the building was the Old OTB building, it's changed a lot and in a good way. It's very beautiful; the only thing I would change is the outside paint job.
* (4) Food & Drink - How well the food tastes, their selection of drinks
This time around, I decided to go with red sangria but I should have stuck with a favorite. It had a not in a good way, interesting taste. For appetizer I went with the Bocadito Radio Roll Ups, which are flour tortillas stuffed with beans and other Mexican goodies, deep fried and drizzled with their crema sauce which seems to be sour cream and lime juice. Entrée wise I went with Plantain Rellanos, you get two plantains cut in half and stuffed with a filling of your choice topped with more of the lime crema sauce, and this is also served with a choice of side salad or beans and rice. I opted for beans and rice, which the rice was a bit hard. Dessert, I almost hesitated with ordering because of the past experience, but I went for it any ways. I went for the fried ice cream. This time around the fried ice cream was actual fried ice cream and not a ball of ice cream rolled in toasted coconut.
A couple side notes: This is the first time I have ever gone to a Latin restaurant and never received complimentary chips and salsa; you do have to pay for them. Also, I did see the Grande Guacamole dish that other customers were ordering and it didn't look anything like the small dish I received the first time I went.
* (4) Price - Here I am not grading my cost, but by the quality of the food I get for the money I spent. (Example: I pay $5 for a hamburger that I could make myself.)
The quality of the food I received was very good and more upscale than what I first received.
* (4) Presentation - How things are presented. Food, Drink, Staff, etc.
Uniforms. Check. Food presentation. Check. Drink presentation. Check. I would only change the outside area where they have a small server station which shows a bag full of dirty napkins and dirty dishes. It takes away from the beautiful work they did and also becomes a magnet for the insects which should be taken care of better.

Great atmosphere,  beautiful interior. I would go again for a drink with friends at one of the three bars. Food,  however,  was disappointing and very overpriced for what we got.  Salad lacked many of the toppings it was supposed to have.  Fish tacos were totally average.  Chimichanga was decent but way overpriced.  Best items were chips with two salsas.  Sorry,  I really wanted to like it but at these prices,  I expect a lot more than a cool interior.

Absolutely delicious! Was a bit worried after reading some of the reviews but we had an outstanding dinner! Service was prompt and friendly and drinks were delicious. The building is beautiful with great attention to detail. Wonderful ambiance! We sat outside which was great. A train went by and surprisingly added to the experience. This spicy chicken burrito was mouthwatering. Really can't remember when I have enjoyed a meal so much. We were a party of four and everyone loved their meals. Everything was really good! Parking in a garage is a block away which was easy, close and well lit. We went in August on a Monday night and parking was free after five pm. Looking forward to going back soon!

You know, they are quite new so I don't think it's so fair to give them a negative rating. They were slammed when we got there and they still need to work on things, but the white Sangria was AMAZING and the Nachos were the best I've ever had. The place looked great, I can't believe how big it is, and I love the decor. Although the price was a little high, and they were a little overwhelmed their first week, I'm sure they will improve, I'll give it another shot.

Just don't. I went for a birthday dinner with 8 people on a Monday night, and it wasn't crowded at all. The drinks were good. The food was not. There was a lot of hype surrounding this place opening and I'm not sure why. The guacamole came out but we had to wait 30 plus minutes for chips. All the food came out at different times, (an hour and a half after we ordered it) and half the orders were either messed up or missing something. The server was really nice and apologetic, but it was just appalling to be at a place that charges the prices they do ($16 for guac, $18 for fish tacos), and have the experience be such a joke. If we had waited that long and the food was amazing, it would be more acceptable but guess what? The food SUCKED. It was the worst Mexican food I'd ever had. I didn't even eat my own birthday dinner. The fish was fishy and overcooked in my fish tacos. Everyone else's was just as bad. I would suggest going here for drinks and chips and salsa...if they have enough chips. Like I said, just don't.

Went with spouse for an early lunch on a Tuesday.  There are two city parking lots within walking distant and the first two hours are free. No wait - greeted by hostess with a smile.  We chose to sit out on the patio due to the beautiful weather.Waitress was friendly and attentive.  We started with the Nacho appetizer and it was delicious.  We both had burritos - one regular size (large portion) and one mini listed on the express lunch menu.  The mini is the perfect size when you start with an appetizer.  The food is Mexican but it is more on the Mexican gourmet or "foodie" style.  We found all food delicious and great flavor.  We enjoyed the atmosphere very much and we liked the fact there was a lot of "space'  in the interior main room.  The experience was great and we will be going back.

Schenectady, wake up! I was very surprised at the low ratings this restaurant has earned after dining there last night.  Schenectady is pretty much a culinary wasteland, and this is a hidden gem.  Dare I say better than the original NYC outpost! The food was excellent, and the prices are reasonable given the quality.  The space is pretty, spacious, and has great lighting - the tables are nicely spaced apart so you can have  a conversation without having others eavesdrop.  And they mix a mean margarita.  Best Mexican I've had in awhile and I work in NYC!  Try it.

We waited patiently for this beautiful restaurant to open and it's finally time!  Today was only their second day open, so I'm not going to complain too much about the 20 minute wait to get a glass of sangria or the 45-minute wait for lunch.  Good for others to note, however, there's no lunch menu this week, so two glasses of sangria, an app and two vegetarian entrees ran us nearly $70.  Food and drinks were excellent.  We had the Mexican Mac & Cheese and the Plantanos Rellenos with seitan.  The guacamole & chips app, however, was quite steep at $12 for a very small portion.  Hard to tell whether the local population will embrace the Manhattan prices, but the quality and taste is certainly worth it.

I stopped in for a beer and a bite today for the first time.  Ever since the exterior paint was applied, I've been interested -- peeking in the windows at that time, even more so.  The place is *gorgeous* with three bars (front, back, and upstairs) and some outdoor space.  Haters may complain about the proximity to "city life", but I guess the've never left the suburbs.  I think the location and physical layout of the place is awesome and a welcome addition to Schenectady.

As for service, all I can say there is that it is a little confused still.  They are very new and I can tolerate some chaos due to the newness.  Matt at the upstairs bar was quite friendly and attentive, and much appreciated.

For the food, I had two "bocadito" (small) apps at the front bar.  The Mexican Mac'n Cheese was quite tasty.  I'm not a restaurant mac-n-cheese fan by nature but this was delicious.  It tasted like it was made with cotija and reminded me of an Elotes dip I had in Sedona, AZ.

I also tried the Calamares Fritos, which is a take on fried calamari.  This was quite tasty as well.  The dusting was flavorful on its own, but the tomatillo sauce was delicious.  I will certainly order this again.

To sum it up -- it's new, give it a try.  They are working the rough edges.  Tolerate the extra dollar too for the lovely interior so it stays that way.

This place is quite exceptional. Impressive in its design, colors, wood and masonry work, art, and altars give the impression of a huge and beautiful  hacienda. The food is exceptional and well priced - my wife and I shared calamari, coated with cornmeal and deep fried. Cooked perfectly and the sauce spicy and flavorful.  We also tried the Chorizo another wonderful tasting appetizer, meaty and cooked in a red wine Dos XX sauce. Our entrees Seafood Chimichanga and Flautas Con Crema were cooked perfectly. Large glasses of red wine, again at a fair price made this place worth a return visit again and again. And the service was spectacular - Brie, our waitress was lovely, helpful, knowledgeable, conversant, readily available and simply pleasant throughout our dinner - 5 stars with no problem!

Had reservations for 7 pm, got there a little early and did get seated, but the hostess questioned if they could seat us 10 minutes early.  Hello, there are vacant tables here.  We waited for 15 minutes and no one showed up at our table to take our order.  We saw a couple nearby seated much later have a waiter arrive to actually take  their order.  We finally decided to go to the hostess stand and ask for someone to come to our table.  Now 20 minutes in, and no drinks and no order.  A person did show up, not a waiter to take our drink and appetizer order.  No mention was made of our long wait.  At any other restaurant we would be offered a complementary appetizer or drinks.  No class here.  We got our appetizers, they were good.  But where is a waiter to take our dinner order.  Had to flag down a person to take our order.  Meals were good not great.  Had the seafood chimi, good, but really small, not at all worth the $20. All four of us decided our meals were good, not great and with the really bad service this was not a good experience.  There is just something lacking here.  Staff here needed some serious training...We sat on the first floor, for the first five minutes heard chairs being moved above, not good....Heavy chairs, and really loud...
Would we go back?  No not likely...Try their restaurant in Hudson?  Yes perhaps the service would be better.  Would have to be better if they are still in business after so many years...
So very disappointed. Ran into some friends at the restaurant, their experience was worse than ours...So, my recommendation is to find another restaurant in Schenectady while Mexican Radio hires new staff or does some serious training...

Went once with my fiance.  The place wasn't busy but there still didn't seem to be enough chairs to go around for all THREE bars.  The hostess left us to wander by ourselves for a good 15 minutes to find a seat...not sure if it's rudeness or policy.  Drinks were good but typical, and the small plates and apps were too expensive to feel it would be worth it to try one.  The decor is cool.  It's an unusual mix of old Schdy architecture and funky Mexican style.  Will try for dinner when I feel like spending $20 on a burrito or salad just because the seitan options on the menu have piqued my interest.

This is a gorgeous space, so I am really hoping they can pull it together and make this place work.  Had dinner/drinks with friends last night, granted it was only their 2nd day of operation but the food was a bit disappointing for all of us.  I had to send mine back completely 2 times (first time in my life that I've ever done that!) and I ended up not eating because the 2nd time they brought it back it was the wrong order.  All of the staff was very nice though.  I'll cut them some slack since they're just starting off but they definitely need to fine tune their operation if they want to stick around.

We went there for lunch with high expectations.  Unfortunately, the food was strictly mediocre at best...way overpriced for the low quality of the fare.  You even had to pay for the chips and salsa, something I never heard of before.  My enchiladas were quite dry, even though I had 3 different meats and 3 different sauces.  I couldn't really even differentiate between the sauces.  I am sorry that we ate there...and have no intention of returning.  And where was the cheese???

I am giving three stars because this is a Mexican Restaurant on the East Coast and they got a few things right and that is to be commended.  The guacamole was excellent although outrageously priced!  I ate enchiladas and the sauce was good and appeared home made.  They stock a good range of drinks but the frozen margaritas come from a machine and are not very good.  I have yet to encounter a black cherry in any Mexican restaurant and this was the flavor of one of the frozen margaritas on offer the day I visited.  The premises is super and if they  adjust their prices and learn to make better margaritas this could be an excellent place to visit.

I have been to the Hudson restaurant and was generally pleased with the experience. The food is slightly above average, the decor, service and drinks were great- but overall it was overpriced. When I heard they were coming to Schenectady I thought wow they better lower their prices or they will not last long.  So yesterday I went to check it out, the renovation is incredible, the decor, service and drinks once again were excellent. But the food is  marginally above average and overall way overpriced. I worked in Manhattan for 4 years, I think in the city people will pay a premium for service and atmosphere with average food. The further you travel from the city however people want value and the quality of the food is the top priority. For this place to succeed they need to adjust to their local customers. People are not going to spend $17 for a burrito in Schenectady.  Especially with Bombers and a proliferation of Chipotles every where you look.  I am thrilled that they invested locally to bring their business here and I really want them to succeed, if they can figure out the value equation they might have chance!

went there with my wife and son to check out something new.
first off, the building and atmosphere was nice. they did a good job on the referb. we were told there would be a 20 - 30 min wait for a table. i noticed that there were a lot of empty tables, maybe waiting for people with reservations, but i also noticed that there was a lot of unused space. there were two rows of tables in an area that would have still be roomy with three rows of tables (maybe  that would help with wait times.)
we were seated after about 15min. the two wait staff were nice and did a good job answering our questions and describing our menu.
we started out with the radio nachos ($8.) with this dish, each tortilla chip had toppings on them. they were really tasty, but there were only 9 or 10 chips.
for dinner my son ordered the chicken tortilla soup ($, my wife ordered the Plantain Relleños ($1, and i ordered the baja fish tacos ($1.
the soup was ok at best. the soup part had corn and thick tomato like stew, topped with a small piece of chicken and couple of tortilla strips. my wifes plantains were ok, never had anything like it before and based on this dish, not interested in ever ordering it again. my fish tacos had a good flavor if i had ordered a veggie taco, but by my second bite, i thought they forgot to put fish in it. i opened the taco to see if there was any fish in it, and there it was, about the size of a mcdonalds french fry was the fish. i asked the waitress if the fish is always this small, she said yes and walked away.
we drink soda and our bill came out to $61.
the original restaurant started in nyc, and they seem to be charging nyc prices because it was way over priced. in my opinion if you want good mexican, go down a block to bombers burritos. the baja fish tacos are $10 for 2 and if you took the fish from all 3 tacos from mexican radio and put them in a bombers taco you'd have half the fish of one bombers taco.
