Regarding the casino, from yesterday's gazette

Excerpt

Quoted Text
McCarthy is looking to expand the benefits to nearby cities like Amsterdam and Gloversville. Amsterdam Mayor Ann Thane said McCarthy has already called her to discuss the casino.

“McCarthy already contacted me [Thursday] night and said he would like to visit and thank the council for their support and would also like to sit down with my staff and talk about a strategy,” Thane said. “He is a tremendous partner, and he is very proactive.”

Thane said officials at Rush Street plan to travel to Amsterdam and encourage residents to apply for jobs. The company is also looking to work with the city’s Hispanic population to hire people for bilingual positions and partner with Workforce Solutions in the Amsterdam Riverfront Center, she said.

Residents would have the opportunity to enroll in the casino gaming management program at Schenectady County Community College and related programs at Fulton Montgomery Community College to earn a degree in the industry, Thane said.

“We’re only 15 minutes away from the school and for a job,” she said. “We also want to look at the transportation system and make sure people have easy access via bus routes. This casino award is really terrific for all of us.”

McCarthy said he is in similar discussions with Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Troy Mayor Lou Rosamillia to ensure the casino hires residents from those cities, as well.

Or is it the FACT that no one wants to buy a house in the city (and fewer and fewer want to rent IN the city - proven by the record high numbers of vacant apartments)  that the mayor is so very extremely desperate to get people to move INTO the city that he's trying to get outsiders jobs in Schenectady?

Maybe Mccarthy doesn't think he can find 1000 people in the city willing to show up for work every day....

That's a good possibility

He's probably been told by Cuomo to "share" with the places that didn't get the casino. Cuomo evidently hates Schenectady, he wouldn't give us something with no strings attached.
Any good-paying casino jobs will be filled by connected people who don't live here. We don't even get the table scraps to ourselves.

What else is new? Thane is a even bigger joke than Mayor McCheese and got every one of her proposed charter amendments rejected by the Amsterdam voters 2 to 1. Talk
about dumb and dumber too. Maybe oppressed County residents should be first in line? This is all feel good news for two losers that couldn't be re-elected dogcatchers
next November. A casino does not a renaissance make.

They are already carving up the mythical jobs. What about STS Steel that is still on the site with high paying blue collar jobs? I can see the election mailers already.
So they screwed everything up-they gots a casino from their DEM bosses. Entire blocks in the City are vacant with huge outstanding tax bills
that no one will ever pay. This changes nothing on the ground. Fewer and fewer getting more and more corporate welfare. No retail-no condos-so give us a casino like
the other depressed region of a depressed State. Camden NJ North with a casino!

I see a good will gesture by the Schenectady Mayor to the surrounding communities.

U are a little insigator . Any good paying jobs would be the middle managment that comes  from other properties to actually run the joint.  - I guess they are well connected. Dont be a crybaby.

This casino is an oportunity in the middle of knowhere.  There is nothing else here. Get real. And the more I think about it- it sounds like its crappy here because you cant work or play well with others.  You put sticks in the spokes in the wheels of any thing and everything that is moving in any dirtection.  Thats not effective.

Same Old sh*t.   They (nayboobs) whine about everything.   They whine when it is cloudy.  They whine when it is sunny.  They whine when it is hot.  They whine when it is cold.  And on and on and on.  They will never be satisfied.

^5. Careful Somebody, blasphemy like that will earn you "sock puppet" designation from the "faux concerned citizen". Of course, I'm beginning to think that in fact she's just another one of mikechristine1's mega-collection of "sock puppets".

I'm glad to see that government projects can use discriminatory hiring practices and hire employees based on race. I'm sure it would go over well if a private business like GE said they were going to work with the Caucasian English only speaking population in Saratoga to fill their positions.

If you lived in the real world you would know this is an everyday practice in business and not
discriminatory at all...when need is for bilingual employees that usually means someone of
a different ethnic background/birthplace.

Go talk to your HR Department and ask them if they would run a job ad specifically looking for Hispanic applicants to fill a bilingual position.  Or, would they run the ad looking for bilingual applicants?  My bet is, they would only advertise for the bilingual qualification, and not specifically mention Hispanic.  But, maybe your HR department stereotypes bilingual applicants by race.
