I came home from dinner at the Wagon Train restaurant at 5:30 tonight and a loose dog was on my porch clawing my front door and barking. My dogs were inside the house barking like crazy too. I chased the dog away and she came back 2 minutes later, starting round 2 of the barking wars. I chased the dog away again only to have it come back again.I grabbed the dog by the collar and checked for an id tag, but it had nothing. I put a leash on the dog and tied it up in the front yard. I called the RPD non-emergency number and told them the dog wouldn't leave. They took my number and called back 15 minutes later to tell me there was no animal control officer on-duty, and that they were going to call Schenectady to come and take the dog. Around 6 o'clock a woman showed up with the city van and asked me what I wanted her to do with the dog. I said, I don't care what you do with it, just get it out of here. She said that she had nowhere to take it. I said fine, I'll just tie it up to the telephone pole across the street and I'll be done with it. She said that there were issues between Rotterdam and Schenectady regarding taking away dogs. I said that I would make it easy on her, that I would drive a couple blocks into Schenectady and let it go. She asked me how that's supposed to help. I said that then she would have jurisdiction and could take it away. She still insisted she wasn't going to take the dog. I started to call Rotterdam again and she finally said, would you load the dog into the van. I said okay. As I was putting the dog into the cage, I started removing my leash and she yelled, I need a leash on her to get her out of the van. I said animal control doesn't have a leash? She said that Schenectady does, but this is Rotterdam. I said I didn't care and I was taking my leash. She reaches into the glove box and pulls out a leash. I put the leash on the dog and picked the dog up and set it directly into the cage. She was terrified of the dog, but the dog wasn't vicious at all. She closed up the van and we looked at each other in silence. I walked away shaking my head in disbelief. 6:40 she drove away. The RPD dispatcher told me on the phone that the city was coming to take the dog to Montgomery County. I told her that information several times and she said she didn't know how to do it, and had no contact information.
Total laziness and incompetence.
She wasn't about to use her Schenectady leash on a Rotterdam dog?
Unbelievable.

You should tell that Justice group for Schenectady dogs that are squeaky wheels at the city council meetings. Is there anyway to contact them, I mean even copy and paste what you wrote, let them read it. I think I remember them one time reading a letter from someone with a lost dog who had to go out of town or something. |

The dog wasn't harmed in any way.
My issue was that their system has a few flaws in it that need repair.
If Rotterdam only takes away daytime animals, it should have something in place where someone knows what the hell to do when a call comes in.
They handed the call off to the city, who was dumbfounded and had no idea how to deal with the issue.
I don't know why the animal control officer in Rotterdam isn't an on call, as needed, job.

the Town won't pay to have a Animal control Officer for duty 24/7.......to take the dogs to Montgomery County is another issue that
needs to be resolved,
the Town only thinks of the government in office.....and the city....that lady is a "token" for someone....
and they had a PT ACO but she wasn't qualified and had to get rid of her...residents can't control their kids....and now dogs....
what does it matter what city, town the dog belongs in......the SPCA should be informed....and then compromise would occur....maybe
is the city any better than Rotterdam??? or vice versa......and they expect to consolidate??????????.......
Rotterdam needs to step up and PAY the ACO ....that person does his job well and takes care of animal issues professionally..and is
very qualified..
.Rotterdam has no back up plan....put money where it belongs.....and not in pockets of the REGIME...get rid of ALL consultants....
double and triple dippers.....qualified people would not need these people......
hope the council will be smarter in the years to come....and not A E I O mentality...

Go on facebook and post it under Steve Capporizzo's Animal Connection with a pic and you can be sure the owner will find out abt the dog and come get it. OR a rescue will step up to the plate. Apparently although we are the highest taxed state in America, we cannot have decent, humane and organized animal control. Maybe it has something to do with the animals not being able to vote or make payoffs to pols.
It goes back to the social compact- take care of each other and ourselves and the government is rendered useless and imbecilic at best. But even though that shot worked for 200,000 years until the modern American bureaucrap, we have lost our ability to function.
As to the city and the dogs, they have an inhumane hellhole and use the dog fees to squander on political pork and payoffs for you guessed who- the special "parties" interests... |

I think people honestly like watching failure after failure of government "solutions" and return to the voting booth to get the same failures. I guess people whose last names end in a vowel run a more efficient government. They aren't crooks either. Like McCarthy(unless sometimes Y is a vowel) |

I probably....... no....... i know i would have kept the dog for at least over night. Even if I had to keep it in my garage. The dog, more than likely got loose without the owners knowledge and was probably from the neighborhood. And apparently didn't sound dangerous. Poor thing. I would have NOT called the local GOV ALMIGHTY!!! They can't find their way out of a paper bag! |

Consider the source! Why try to be caring when you can pass off to someone else! "Not my problem" mentality! Tie the dog to a pole overnight!!!! |

If that's a fact, then you may want to go to the police department and give them their dog. Cops abuse humans for their livelihood. I can only imagine how many animals they abuse. |

I tied the dog to the pole in front of the proper authority that refused to deal with it. The entire neighborhood was being disturbed by the dog's incessant barking. Yep, blame the person who attempted to let the proper authority do their job. It really isn't my problem, that the government refused to do what they claim they are supposed to do. My problem was that my own dogs wouldn't calm down with another dog barking constantly at my front door. |

I tied the dog to the pole to force the government to do their job. The dog had to be removed from my property. I called the authorities and they refused. But they aren't inhumane by refusing to help the dog. Just the guy protecting his own home. |
