Here's a better way of doing it instead of such grants.
If hotels want to build in the area, it's because they see value in having a property there.
Giving them big incentives is just added profit for them.
This is example of giving up much less and getting more for the local community:
Quoted Text
A 101-room Homewood Suites by Hilton extended-stay hotel under construction near Carrier Circle will receive nearly $410,000 in tax breaks.

The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency voted 6-0 Oct. 7 to exempt the $13.28 million hotel from the state mortgage recording tax and from sales taxes on construction materials.

Those tax breaks total an estimated $542,537 for 6006 Fair Lakes Hotel LLC, the real estate entity created by Pioneer Cos. founder Michael J. Falcone and his business partners. The company will have to pay a project fee of $132,775 to the county development agency, so its actual savings will be $409,762.

Site work has started on the hotel at 6006 Fair Lakes Road, next to Falcone's 100-room Hilton Garden Inn in Pioneer Business Park. Falcone opened the Hilton Garden Inn in 2002.

The tax exemptions granted to Falcone's new hotel are the same as those approved by the county agency in September for developer Peter Muserlian's planned 108-room Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites at 6593 Weighlock Drive. Construction has not started on that hotel yet.

Muserlian's 6593 Weighlock Drive LLC was exempted from a total of $521,010 in sales taxes on construction materials and the state mortgage recording tax. He will have to pay a fee of $127,788 to the development agency, so his actual savings will be $393,222 on the $10.22 million project.

Less of a cruel hit on the local property owners. The main benefit in doling out money or tax-breaks or whatever to wealthy people like the Hiltons, is that it creates high-paying positions for the politically connected, who would otherwise have to contend with the ever-shrinking pool of good-paying jobs in private industry like the rest of us.

I agree with you.

While I happen to think Metroplex is a good thing, it can always be improved.  Over the past few years, I have suggested on this site at least one important improvement --- the Metroplex board should be made up of the County legislators and not appointed members.  At least that way, the Metroplex board would be DIRECTLY accountable to the voters for their decisions.

i also happen to think that it is NOT a good idea to have the owner of a major business in the county on the board because he or she could use his or her  position on the board to keep business competitors out of the county.

I don't know about keeping competitors out.....but the golubs clearly benefited from the taxpayers via METROPLEX/GILLEN!

And correct me if i'm wrong....but wasn't Mr. Neil one of the METROPLEX/GILLEN founders?
