DoubleTree in Schenectady expected to open June 2015

Schenectady

A new DoubleTree by Hilton hotel on Nott Terrace will open in June 2015, about six months behind Schahet Hotels' original target of a late 2014 opening, a company official confirmed Thursday.

"Hopefully, it will be a little bit earlier" than the June target, said Greg Schahet, president and chief financial officer for Indianapolis-based Schahet Hotels. "Most of (the delay) was really due to the age of the building, finding things that we weren't expecting, and working around them," he added.

The $13.1 million project to convert the former Holiday Inn on Nott Terrace into a DoubleTree by Hilton included demolition of all but one wing of the old hotel, with a new single-story wing that will include a full-service restaurant and lounge, exercise room and pool, banquet space and lobby.

The rooms in the existing wing will be "basically gutted" and rebuilt, Schahet said.

The project got a boost Wednesday when the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority approved a $250,000 grant toward construction costs. The hotel, when complete, will have 124 rooms.

Metroplex Chairman Ray Gillen said delays aren't unexpected in such projects, with various approvals required before work can proceed.

"Everything's more complicated than you think," he said.

Schahet also owns the Hampton Inn on State Street in downtown Schenectady. Metroplex said Schahet was investing $13.1 million in the project.

Schahet said the hotel will have between 30 and 50 full- and part-time employees when it reopens.

OK, where is that dem voice of poop cheering for more stealing from the taxpayers to give to the rich in exchange for a handful of low wage maids and dishwasher jobs.

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

A $250,000 grant towards a $13,100,000 project is a reasonable and good investment.  Any reasonable personof even average intelligence would see that.

Actually with a median family income of about $41k, if the company can afford $13MM, they can afford the extra $250k.

Economic development agencies all across the country -- regardless of the partisan make-up -- routinely give grants towards projects like these.   This IS a good project.  An old hotel is being revitalized and upgraded.  It will create jobs and generate sales tax revenue.  And there will be other hotel chains and other commercial/retail business coming to Schenectady because of the momentum created by project like this.

Can see your point, especially if the same system is kept in place.   That's the crux of all this, the mechanics of the system is in perpetuity, with only the actors/cast being the only difference to carry things out.

I've made post after post illustrating the fallacy of these types of endeavors, how they contributed to the decline of various municipalities, Stockton and Detroit being two of the more egregious examples. With an investment, you tend to get some sort of return. Taxpayers are not investors, and the people benefiting from these taxpayer rip-offs are not investors either, as it isn't their money.
Why do taxes keep rising while services are withheld, if these arrangements are beneficial financially to the taxpayers?
I'm only posting these remarks in case someone unfamiliar with this happens to be perusing the site. I wouldn't want people trying to keep informed to fall for the propaganda they see in the media.

If you were a homeowner you would realize how stupid your comment was.

Even a person with a lower than average IQ could understand why.

Why do you always think it's fine to give homeowner's money to those who don't need it?

Answer: Because you aren't a homeowner.

The recipient of a massive grant should be required to at least live in the county, or use labor from the county, matching the amount of the grant.

The Detroit Renaissance bankrupted the city, but the rich still got richer.

$250,000 out of total project cost of $13.1 million is NOT a "massive" grant.

Second, I am most certainly a property owner and I do pay taxes.

You b**ch and moan about the situation in the city and then when something is done to help improve things you b**ch and moan about that.  If you wish to live a miserable existence that is your choice.  I choose to stay positive, to enjoy life and to celebrate the POSITIVE forward movement that is taking place in my community.

Metroplex gives out handfuls of these massive corporate welfare grants each year.

Costing the homeowners that must pay higher taxes as a result.

11 million a year is massive.

Metroplex gets that money that would otherwise go towards operating expenses of the local communities.

Raising taxes is not making improvements.

You are a tax and spend corporate welfare loving liberal.
