Looks like the Hannaford chain is no longer staying open 24 hrs. I thought it just pertained to the Rotterdam store, as they've had a sign posted which says they will be closed from 12 - 6 am starting Aug. 31. Checking around though it's not the only one.

people do not trust going out at those hours anymore...especially in rotterdam.....know for sure....not safe...
I know a couple of long-time employees at the Rotterdam store, and from what they tell me it's more a problem of bottom line and the inability to staff overnitgts. I've been in Hannaford and PC late at night, and really I've never understood how they can afford to stay open. Although I'm sure some folks don't venture out because of safety, I think the bigger issue is profitability of the stores. As you all well know grocery store profit margins are measured in just a few pennies.

I go to Hannaford often after midnight. The store employees are busy stocking the shelves.
They can't stock shelves in the dark. The lights will still be on all night.
It costs one salary to have someone at the register. That person is also usually doing other chores all night.
I did make the mistake of not locking the doors on my vehicle one night and everything that wasn't bolted down was taken.
I was the only car in the lot and one parking space from the door.
I still like going there for certain items.
Walmart at Balltown Rd. and State St. is open 24 hours and for canned foods and frozen foods the save you a ton of money.
Marie Callander's large TV dinners at Walmart are $2. At Hannaford and Price Chopper the are $3.59.
Almost every frozen food is at least 25% cheaper at Walmart.
Hannaford and Shop rite have good choices of canned fruits containing no sugar or aspartame.
Walmart has a better selection of canned vegetables and lower prices.
Shop Rite closes at 11pm as well.
Hey I'm just pointing out what I was told by folks who work for the company, I figure they know more about it than I.
By the way they've been doing a real crappy job of stocking the shelves at night at the Rotterdam store. And it also appears their loss prevention people are asleep on the job. Bought a small container of coffee the other day, and when I got home found it had been opened and was half empty. Although they replaced my coffee, they wouldn't compensate me for my time and gas I used driving back to return it.

My thought....if folks can't do grocery shopping between the hours of 6am and midnite 7 days a week.....they got to reorganize their lives! I mean really!! imho
not to mention that there are plenty of other establishments opened 24/7.
and they probably aren't generating enough revenue to stay open during those hours.

I love shopping at night, hardly no lines and you basically have the place to yourself. Even during the day some of the stores are understaffed and you have insanely long lines. When at Walmart if you have long lines walk over to the electronics section and cash out there

9-10 am on Fridays. The only time it's crowded is the Friday before a holiday. Even then it's not that bad.

Shopping at Shop Rite when it is crowded is like being on bumper cars.
The aisles are too narrow.
That's probably by design. By slowing you down they figure you'll buy more. One of many supermarket tricks to keep you in the store. The longer you're in the building the more you'll spend. Or so they say. I saw a whole list of supermarket tricks somewhere once. I don't remember that one being on it, but same deal.

Nope, not true. I mean it could be what you are saying about design, but the Nisky ShopRite is tight for aisles but the did not built that store. They took a kind of old fashioned small grocery store, once a Grand Union and put a Shop Rite in there.
If Price Chopper never moved across the street on Eastern Pkey, they potentially would have been in their former small store.
Go to Shop Rite in Colonie and Albany, far more square feet, but they built those from scratch. But then actually, keeping you in the store longer buy having wide aisles and more distance over all can also be said for the big huge stores.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
Ah, I found the list I had seen. This is part of 50 tricks actually. I like the one about shaking the excess water off of produce. I hate those misters. They will do anything to slow you down in a store.

13. There’s a reason that bread is in a brown paper bag: The faster the bread goes stale, the sooner you’ll be back at the store to buy more, a former worker says. Put loaves in airtight plastic bags as soon as you get home.
14. Avoid the herd mentality: Shop when the store isn’t as crowded or you could be in danger of buying more so you can be part of the group. Mondays and Tuesdays are the best — skip weekends if you can.
15. USDA quality grade means more than the cut’s name: Angus? So what — that’s no guarantee it’ll be a good steak, says Kari Underly, former grocery store meat cutter and author of The Art of Beef Cutting: A Meat Professional’s Guide to Butchering and Merchandising. “Prime is the best, then choice (usually the highest grade available in grocery stores), followed by select, and finally standard.”
16. You aren’t that apple’s first customer: Shoppers are constantly picking up produce, dropping it, and putting it back, explains another former grocery worker, so beware. “I’ve seen kids take a bite and put the item back. It took me a long time to start eating fresh fruits and vegetables again after working in a store,” she says.
17. The carts never get cleaned: Babies will do their business on carts, chicken juice will leak and who knows if anyone cleaned up after that? If you’re worried about germs, give carts a quick swipe with sanitizing wipes.
