In today's Sunday Gazette, opinion section, page 3.
Very true and very informative.
Taxpayers are kept in the dark about how THEIR money is spent.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
the problem is the voting majority like being in the dark
Or could it be that the non-voting minority think that by not voting things will magically get better? Just throwing that out there.

NOTHING WILL CHANGE! The reps created the METROPLEX/GILLEN!!! Again...........the 'other side' would be doing the exact same thing!
The one you vote for is the one (party) who campaigns on abolishing the METROPLEX/GILLEN!!! Who do you think will have the balls enough to say that? Reps can't....they created it...and want to control it. Dems can't.....they control it.
So don't waste your time and energy to venture out and vote. Just move out!!

Hey, I essentially agree with you. Everyone's looking to blame somebody else, be it DEMS, REPS, Metroplex, those who vote, those who don't etc. But it seems to me, that if we're looking to affix blame, then we need to look in the mirror. WE let this happen. WE'RE the ones who allowed things to get this bad. That's all I'm saying.

How did WE let it get this bad? Whether we voted in the dems or reps.......we'd still be having this SAME conversation today!!! Owning/controlling the METROPLEX/GILLEN is like being a banker or corporate CEO. It's the golden café! So until the failed METROPLEX/GILLEN is abolished....neither dem nor rep is going to save the city/county from it's high taxation!!! And for the record....there really is no BLAME since the end result would be the same no matter who was voted in.
hey here's a suggestion.......everyone start boycotting price chopper since Neil was one of the METROPLEX/GILLEN'S founders. or better yet....boycott ALL METROPLEX/GILLENS businesses. who do you think will do that???
I hear PROCTORS is packed most of the time. Johnny's is standing room only on the weekend. all of the 'new' downtown apts are almost all rented. Paul Mitchell's is flourishing.
so who's gonna boycott these places?? the overtaxed home owner? Nope...they are just walking away!

LOL. I've been boycotting Price Gouger for 20 years.
You make a good point re: boycotting. That being said, although there are plenty of dissatisfied home owners, the fact that the places you speak of seem to be thriving, indicates to me that not everyone shares your thoughts. Quite the contrary, it would appear at least on the surface there are far more folks who are ok with the status quo.
Oh, and how did we let it get this bad? From where I sit, I'd say apathy and complacency are the culprits. By the time we looked up things were too far gone.

The Republicans only wish they had picked someone like Ray Gillen to run Metroplex in the first place. He has done a great job in the past decade.
As for voting, it is ABSOLUTELY necessary for EVERY eligible voter to register and vote. Discouraging people from voting is the stupidest thing to suggest in a democratic republic. It doesn't matter whether you agree or disagree with me. The only way to ensure effective government that is accountable to the people ------ IS TO VOTE.

First...if it wasn't Gillen....it would have been someone just like him...and the end result would have been the same.
Second....as far as voting.....Most folks know that voting is nothing more than a scam! Candidates are 'selected' not 'elected'. And I tell EVERYONE....especially the young adults to NOT VOTE!! That sends the BEST message to GOV ALMIGHTY that folks have no confidence in the failed scammed system.
when an elected official wins with only 20% of the populous voting, that in itself sends a huge message of NO CONFIDENCE!!!
DON'T VOTE!!!!!!!!

Less than 20% of all eligible voters in Rotterdam elected the supervisor and the board.
I would bet that this is true in the city as well.
As I said, apathy and complacency got us where we are now.
By the way I really don't give a rat's behind whether someone votes or not. It's an individual's choice. But from my chair, there are only two ways of ever changing things. Voting or armed insurrection. I don't see either happening in my remaining years. I feel bad for you middle-aged folks and younger that are going to have to deal with it. Good luck with that.

The two biggest problems in our community are a) the constant negativity - those who ALWAYS complain about EVERYTHING .. they can never find anything positive or good to say, and b) those who refuse to vote and tell others to do the same.
The other problems in our community - vacant buildings, obsolete & aging housing, aging infrastructure, need for more jobs -- those problems can all be fixed.
Unfortunately, getting rid of the negativity and apathy is much more difficult -- and is the most TOXIC problem facing our community.

Negativity/complaining/toxic are the new rhetorical words for reality. However, it really hasn't worked.....country wide. Folks who 'live it' aren't buying it anymore. The other issues of vacant buildings, obsolete and aging housing/infrastructure and the need for more jobs (not to forget HIGH TAXES and a SUBSTANDARD SCHOOL) have not improved since the inception of the METROPLEX/GILLEN. In fact, these matters have gotten much worse over the last decade. Even the reps wouldn't have been able to fix it, since they would have done the exact same thing if given the chance.
So because the reps would have done the exact same thing if they controlled the golden café, there is absolutely no reason to vote!! NONE!! A 'no vote' is a vote for 'lack of confidence' in the scammed system.
DON'T VOTE...AND SEND A MESSAGE!!!

Taxes going up, that is something to be positive about! YES, Higher taxes are WONDERFUL
City's tax base is MASSIVELY FALLING That is OH SO WONDERFUL. Falling tax base is such a wonderful positive thing in the city.
Oh yes, taking money from the taxpaying homeowners to build new buildings for millionaires - that is oh so wonderful. And when people have no money to replace the furnace in their home, replace a roof, etc. OH THAT IS SUCH A POSITIVE in the city. ooh yes, CHEER CHEER
[size=14]CHEER CHEER for people losing their homes. This is such a positive thing in the city.
People losing money on their homes, people who get a job transfer and can't sell their homes. People who can't refinance their homes because the value of their homes is less than what they owe on their mortgages - THIS IS JUST OH SUCH VERY POSITIVE NEWS IN THE CITY.
Oh that old dilapidated building, the former DSS building, the building is owned by a BILLIONAIRE, it is finally going to be demolished - that is such positive news, people will no longer have to look at that building. Oh CHEER CHEER, the owner of the building can MORE THAN AFFORD to use HIS OWN MONEY to demolish it, but NOPE, the demo will be paid for by financially struggling homeowners
The positive news in the city is that long time taxpaying homeowners might lose their homes when they can't pay increased tax bill that will be necessary to pay the loan back for the demolition of a building OWNED BY A BILLIONAIRE.
After getting TENS OF MILLIONS in tax dollars to reno Proctors, and then at $25 MILION budling paying NO TAXES, it's CEO LIES in a legal document about owning a second house with a STAR exemption, LIES ON A LEGAL GOVERMENT DOCUMENT and so gets financial benefit - THAT IS OH SO POSITIVE
YES LET'S BE POSITIVE
Falling home values THIS IS A POSOITIVE
Falling home sales - WE MUST BE POSITIVIE ABOUT THAT
Drastically falling home sale prices - CHEER CHEER, THJIS IS A POSITIVE
OOOOH, let's have an orgasm, we are so happy, fancy lighting on Erie Blvd is so wonderful, even though the neighborhoods are dark
OOOOOh, a fancy road paving job on Erie Blvd, OH SO WONDERFUL - but the streets in the neighborhoods DESPERATELY in need of repaving and the people suffer, but it's fine if the people, the residents, the homeowners, the taxpayers suffer, that is just wonderful as long as there is uncessary fancy lighting and unncessary trees and islands on Erie Blvd
