Again you all are missing my point. The City of Schenectady has a very unique situation and opportunity to do the opposite of some of the very trends that are hurting other communities. Maybe hurting is a bad way to put it but rather not benefitting. We have the opportunity to increase the student volunterism and spending outside the college. Union College is so close to downtown and the train station and police and fire stations. It is very unique. The city and county leaders are missing a very big opportunity as once they go 100% on campus it will never go back. Once they go 100% on campus more and more spending will go on campus.
The students that live on campus all 4 years at least visit the off campus housing from time to time. They then get a good opportunity to see the beauty of the neighborhood, the Union Triangle and the parks. They then have the chance to fall in love with the area. hink about being a landlord or investing in downtown. Isolating the students is not good for Schenectady, the college or the City.

Maybe on-campus housing is a step toward increasing enrollment and insuring sufficient student housing without concern that added enrollment would push students to off-campus housing in less desirable areas...just a thought.

Folks from around the country are reluctant to send their kid to Union based on it's location/crime! We have heard this FIRST HAND!!!
The FACTS seem to suggest otherwise. The number of applications to Union College GREW by 2.5% last year. This was opposite the national trend, Proving that Union College is a great college located in a great City-County that potential students and their parents want to come to.

You are right. You changed my mind. I agree with you now and that is why I am going to offer my property to Union College the first chance I get. They already visited me a couple of times asking about it. I will also suggest the same to my neighbors who have already entertained the thought. I bet you I could get a tax deduction for the loss at the sale.

I didn't say enrollment was up or down.
I said that we have talked to folks who are reluctant and concerned about the safety of their kids 'off campus'.
They already know that Union is a great college!!!!
we were actually at a 'well know restaurant' with friends for dinner last year. it was the same day as union graduation. So some out of town parents/kids were there for dinner following the graduation. They thought the city was a sh!thole and couldn't wait to get out.....TRUTH!!!

Yes they stayed in the area after graduation, but not in Schenectady, they all moved upon graduation to other communities and now reside in places like Bethlehem/Delmar, Clifton Park, Saratoga, and Guilderland. I too would not be here if it wasn't for the amount of time and money I have invested in my properties.
The housing certainly may bring in more students, and it will most certainly be good for the school, but in the end it will also certainly hurt the city tax rolls and with it the city.
Nothing is going to improve in this city until the government stops allowing for profit business to get tax breaks they don't deserve.

I guess the every increasing poverty rate indicates that these college grads are staying here (are they the people getting the dishwasher jobs, ticket takers, and maids at the taxpayer funded gin mills, taxpayer funded theaters, and taxpayer funded hotel?)
I guess the falling home sales is indicative of them buying houses here?
I guess the increase in vacant rental residential units is indicative of them choosing to stay here after graduation?

I dont think the population is falling. It is flat or slightly up. The preK and Kindergartens are blooming with class sizes over 20 to 25 kids. The average income per family is dropping like a rock in Schenectady County and the majority live in the city. Can't wait to sell my property to Union College and watch them make it pretty again.

Applications are up everywhere not just Union. because students are applying to more and more colleges at once.

Good for Union College. It is one of the biggest anomolys ever. Has one of the highest Tuitions and Fees in the whole country and isnt even one of the Top 50 Colleges.
