Well, sort of.   Good thing however they (SPD) didn't make a quick decision to shoot.

SCHENECTADY - Police said a 14-year-old boy pointed a toy gun at them and then ran off with the replica that officers were convinced was an actual firearm.

The incident happened late Friday on Craig Street. Police said the boy and several others were standing outside a home on the 700 block when the teen turned toward the police cruiser and pointed the gun at the vehicle.

The teen ran into a nearby home and was taken into custody as he tried to slip out another door, police said.

Police said the weapon was a CO2 air gun that was a replica of a Smith & Wesson M&P .45-caliber handgun that looked so realistic police thought it was authentic until they tried to "render it safe."

The teen will face charges in Family Court. He was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. The charges are misdemeanors.

...but if the cop blew the child's head off because he was in possession of a toy gun and frightened state agents, it would have be a reasonable response, and that officer would get a promotion.  Unfortunately, all the officers could do is give a 14 year old a criminal record.

Parents must register toy guns.  The state needs to know which households possess non lethal toy guns.  For public safety of course.

Smarten up kids, don't point anything which looks like a gun at police, people have been killed for pulling out their cell phones or wallets because officers jumped the gun. In this case the kid is lucky he wasn't lit up like the 4th of July for his stupidity and it would have been justified in my book.

Fake ( the bb gun the kid had) a very close replica to the real gun below

Real (what the cops thought he had)

Sad...cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, and army were played when I was a kid.  It's sad that the sight of a gun, adults suspect the child to be a killer.  My nephew goes to a local suburban school, and he liked to play hunting on the playground with his friend, using little twigs and their imagination.  And the monitors on the playground make him put the twigs down because they are pretending they are hunting guns.  It is truly and insane world when the adults irrational fears are projected onto a child's imagination.

But the mayor and his dem buddies get a cop off virtually scott free from pointing a real gun at civilians who did NOTHING.
And a year of full pay and a lavish pension to boot!

We all probably grew up playing those games and had toy guns that looked very real, although even back then we never pointed them at the police or people not knowing what we were up to. Times have changed and not for the better

Hey, if you said that about cops, you'd be an anti government extremist.  But...since you said it about a poor 14 year old living in the ghetto.  You are a patriotic, red blooded American!

Funny, I don't remember any cop getting promoted for shooting someone - children are apparently not the only ones with active imaginations.

mike chrristine - I'm not fan of the Mayor but I can assure you he would have little impact over what a Republican DA in another County does.

This site - no matter what the news it gets twisted into the same narratives

Things are not like they used to be.

With lack of respect and no value to life.

Some have ruined the fun and freedom of childhood for many.

If any of us drove up Craig St and had that "gun" pointed at us what would we think.

The teen knew what he was doing. Let him pay the consequences.

Maybe he'll learn something his parents didn't teach him.

Like responsibility.

Maybe he won't be one of the older teens/adults out on the street with an ILLEGAL gun with his only intent to commit a crime with it.

Some are ruining the freedom and fun of being an adult.

Because of lack of respect and no value to life.
