SCHENECTADY — A Schenectady County Jail inmate was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning at Ellis Hospital shortly after he was found sitting on his cell floor with a sheet around his neck, sheriff's department officials said.

Lucky Lee Wilkins Jr., 29, was discovered at 1:58 a.m. by a correction officer conducting his normal rounds. The other end of the sheet tied around his
neck was attached to the top of the cell bar, the sheriff's statement says.

County jail inmate Lucky Lee Wilkins Jr. was found early Wednesday sitting on the floor of his cell with one end of a sheet wrapped around his neck and the other end tied to his neck and attached to the top of the cell bar.

Authorities said he committed suicide.

Wilkins, 29, was the son of a Schenectady man who was fatally shot in 1996 while trying to burglarize the home of an armed man in a wheelchair, county law enforcement officials said.

Wilkins, whose address was not available, had been at the jail on $25,000 bail since March 24 on a charge of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. State authorities have been notified about the jail death.

This is not the first time Wilkins family has dealt with tragedy.

In 1996, Kevin Olsen, 25, of Schenectady, was sitting in his wheelchair when he shot and killed Lucky Lee Wilkins, 33, as the man tried to enter his Eastern Avenue ground-level apartment during the early morning hours.

At the time, police authorities said the elder Wilkins had an extensive criminal history that included several felony and misdemeanor convictions, including robberies and larcenies, and was involved in drug activity.

Shortly before the fatal encounter, police said Wilkins had stabbed a man inside a State Street apartment following an argument over crack cocaine.

At the time, Olsen told the Times Union that because of his disability, people see him as easy prey.

"The guy kicked in my door, and I blew his brains out,'' Olsen said. ''People always rob me because I'm crippled. They feel like I can't do anything. But I showed them. I don't think anyone else will be coming in.'' An alert was on a door: ''WARNING!! Is There Life After Death? Trespass Here and Find Out.'
