My Dad's in the Legion and they collect flags that that have torn or weathered over the years and they burn them instead of people just "throwing them out"
I like now that the stars are taken off first and given to veterans.
Talked to my Dad earlier today and it hit me later on, this is the first year he has not attended any service for Memorial Day.
And that's not him, I worry.
I started this thread with what I thought was a message and touching tribute to those who served at a time that many were forgotten and not
welcomed home like they should have been.
Partly because of the mood at that time.
Today I think of my uncles who served in World War 2. My father in law who was a pilot in WW2, his plane was shot down, but he survived and is in his
late 90s in a nursing home. My grandfather who came here from Poland on a ship that landed at Ellis Island and before he had full citizenship was
called back to Poland, he was a Polish Freedom fighter fighting for Poland, and had to eat his horse to survive. and mostly I think of my Dad, who since I was a toddler would be gone on weekends and then for weeks at a time in the National Guard, not only serving our country but our state in times of a
prison riot and natural disasters. I think of my stepsister who served three tours in Iraq in the Air Force, finally coming home for good to be with her
husband and 16 year old daughter only to have her daughter die in a horrific car accident soon after
I think of all our Veterans and those serving now and their families. God Bless them all.
