They are closing because the lease is up and the owner will not renew it!!!
Nice try.... The place is a ghost town on weekends, a time where it should be busy....It is way too big and the rent costs too much to be viable...its a sign of the times. Without the mall walk-by traffic, the Barnes and Noble in Colonie Center would suffer the same fate.
"Arguing with liberals is like playing chess with a pigeon; no matter how good I am at chess, the pigeon is just going to knock out the pieces, crap on the board, and strut around like it is victorious." - Author Unknown
There have been drug dealers and slumlords in Schenectady for at least 50 years. It isn't a recent phenomenon. And the FACT is that if we did NOT have the economic development projects (undertaken by Metroplex in the past 10 years) than the City-County of Schenectady would be in WORSE shape. The neighborhoods AND Downtown would be in WORSE shape.
Not a fact, an opinion. If you slashed taxes and allowed free enterprise to rebuild Schenectady, it can be argued that the same in not better results. And that's without putting the taxpayer on the hook for millions in bond repayment.

Fact: If the over $200 million spent on downtown in the last 10 years, along with the $160,000 they donated to politicians, were not taken from our tax money, our property taxes would be half of what they are now.
Fact: Low taxes brings investors and homeowners.
Fact:High taxes and wealth redistribution to the wealthy corporations brings urban decay, crime and poverty.
Downtown would be booming with small businesses if taxes were low.
You wouldn't need to bribe mega corporations to come here.
I mean, really, when you can buy a book ta B&N for $15 but going to Open Door you pay $20, that's not a good thing
Then think of this, you want a specific book, you go into Open Door, the tiny little store, 90% chance they will NOT have it on their shelves. Oh sure, they can order it, but then that means you have to go back there on another day, probably pay for parking, and you STILL have to pay more for the book than B&N.
Going to Open Door and having to order, who knows how long til it comes in . Days? Weeks???? But Barnes and Noble it will be on their shelf 90% of the time because they are a bigger store.
Now, of course, if you want, you can buy from amazon for less than both of those
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
that is just what is happening to books......they are disappearing and being replaced by the digital world....
Exactly, that is why you have computers now at the library even though the answers are all around them, books are becoming a thing of the past and many are switching to digital readers

If you want the ebook or audio book for free, you can do what every person under the age of 25 does and download it for free (technically stealing) from torrent sites.

Wrong.
Copyrights and patents are technically stealing from the free market by injecting government mafia protectionism, thereby adding false value to otherwise nearly worthless things.
Should a person earn a million dollars for singing a song?
For the past ten thousand years they did not.
Copyrights use the force of law to extort exclusivity and deny competition.
Copyrights have stifled economic growth and a free market economy, and replaced it with economic slavery and protectionist profiteering.
With the closure of Barnes and Noble in Mohawk Commons, those who are serious about purchasing books will shop at Amazon.com. The prices are very competitive and shipping is fast and often free. Going to a small and independent book store is a waste of time. They usually don't have the book that you are searching for and, if they do, the price is full retail.
If business is as good as Schenectady is saying....then we should be seeing a JC Penny, Boscov's, Cabella's, Macy's, LLBean, Cheese Cake Factory or perhaps a Lord and Taylor beating down the doors to the old B&N space.
