Shadow - or they might be less likely to enforce some laws because of fear of retribution against their families.  If you think the city's crime problem is related to where cops live - you are wildly off the mark.

One somewhat minor point that never gets brought up is that the cops moving out of the city significantly diminished their ability to impact local politics.  I remember a cop commenting on that.  He, who at the time was a city resident, argued that once the cops were allowed to move out of the city they lost the right to vote in council and mayoral races.   Think about how close the last Mayoral race was.

I think paying people to be your punitive conscience and the strongmen for a system that is corrupt is extortion...and I don't
mean this on a personal level.

it's the prevailing attitude of leaders and their handling of the masses.

I could never be a police officer, questions would get asked later.....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Lol!  Like a 150 votes impacts local politics more than controlling the Conservative Party endorsement.  Yeah it significantly diminishes police involvement in politics.

Come on, let's get to the REAL reason the City cops don't live in the City.... too much crime and insane taxes (but it's mostly the crime).

The police see the underbelly of the City and know it's just getting worse. The FBI knows it, the police know it and anyone who has ever been through the Hill and many other locations after dark knows this.

The only people ignoring it is the Mayor and his fellow jellyfish on the Council. Keep giving out keys to the City because no one wants them anymore.....

Cicero  - 150 votes plus their friends and families and actively involved in getting out the vote and the message.  How many votes did the Mayor win by last time?  How many council elections were decided by a few hundred votes or less.

Parent is talking out of their a**.  I was a cop and lived in and outside of the City during my career - my level of service did not fluctuate based on where I lived.

I had problems living in the City - had to arrest someone on a domestic assault charge half a block away from my house, on another occasion woman showed up at my door wanting me to come down and deal with a family problem.  some POS spit on my car and my kids were harassed form time to time because of my job.   I cannot say these were everyday happenings but these incidents and some personal factors made me think it was best for my family to move outside the city.

Towards the end o my career thought about moving back in, even after I left the agency.  The houses I really liked were in the GE Plot and really too much house for he needs of me and the mrs.   Kept looking for  a house off Central park - Londonderry but the opportunity never presented itself.  Actually, one did and I friggin blew it.  There was house over there for about $140k.  Should have jumped on it.

Bellevue is also a decent option.  Woodlawn -meh - maybe some of the houses off Consaul Road, other than that nothing really appealed to me.

well thank you for taking my opinion, and the opinion of everyone I know,so seriously and respectfully. It is nice to know that you have such an understanding of those in the community you serve. I tell you a truthful opinion shared by a large part of this community and you choose to belittle it and curse.

See, youre harassed by thugs for doing your job and the rest of us are harassed for reporting crimes, for cleaning up our yards, for telling someone to stop pissing on the tree in your front lawn.

I don't blame you or any other cop for leaving the city but you will never convince me that you care as much about this community when you choose to leave it at the end of the day. There is more to taking care and being part of a community then doing your job well.

Aren't cops that live outside the government they work for just mercenaries?

Parent - apologize for the language used, obviously I disagree with the notion that you have to live in the city to perform your job properly.  The point I was trying to make was that by performing that job while living in the city, it can create problems for the officers' family.  And, despite that - I still looked for housing within the city.  One problem that remains is that the type of housing in stock in the city is limited  (e.g., no new construction).  But, I realize I am not going to change some people's minds re: cops living outside the city.

visitor, they enforce laws? Don't see that here on the hill. One example JB park, enough said.
