SCHENECTADY — The snow is mostly gone, but the accidents keep coming from Schenectady waste haulers.
Drivers of recycling and garbage trucks have hit four parked cars in the past two months alone. The most recent came Wednesday.
On Monday, Mayor Gary McCarthy said he was working on ways to reduce accidents. But after another car was struck Wednesday, City Councilman Vince Riggi said the answer was clear: Tell drivers they must work eight-hour days.
Currently, their contract lets them leave work as soon as they finish their routes. Usually, they start before daybreak and are done by noon.
“They’re rushing,” Riggi said. “There’s clearly a pattern here, without question.”
He said a former manager told him the department used to track productivity — tonnage per hour — and used it to intervene when workers suddenly finished their work in half the time.
“You can tell when they’re rushing,” Riggi said. “But he said they haven’t run productivity reports in a long time.”
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
So of they finish there route in 6 hours they are getting paid for 8? If they finish in 6 they should spend the rest of the day the picking up the stuff they left behind trying to get out early . No wonder there is so much garbage laying all over the place.

Must be nice in the summer going home at 1pm when their time card says they left at 3 pm.
Driving erratically, damaging City vehicles and private property, doing a poor job picking up garbage... and we wonder why the streets are littered with garbage.
Bet a private garbage company would have fired each and everyone of these thieves .......

Must be lucky on my street. My garbage men, other than being very early in the morning, do a pretty good job. I've seen the pick up trash they drop, and last week when I was running late, they saw me carrying my cans to the curb, they met me half way and carried some for me.
I have tough, almost gotten hit several times over the past few years, pulling off of Union St onto the side streets. The driver over there seems to like to drive on the completely wrong side of the road.

Fact remains, this garbage crew corruption can be compared to when the mob ran sanitation in NYC.
Except.. the taxpayers in Schenectady are paying the bills and the Mayor continuously turns a blind eye.
trash on the streets not the problem....being taxed for sanitation service then having a high cost fee imposed to pay for the same said service, then getting shortchanged on the service hours worked by the city employees {with full permission of MY city reps who brokered the contract}

The garbage men have a tough job to do and they do a pretty decent job, saying that there is some issues mentioned above that should be addressed. If their hours are brought up don't expect them to do more work they will just take longer doing their route, that is all really would happen like it or not. Garbage on the streets is usually from the scumbags who toss it there, I see it every day.
