What is that about?

Let me know if you feel the same way in the future if you ever need the fire department. It amazes me how ungrateful people are until they need fire/police/ems. Instead of wasting energy complaining why don't you go volunteer. These men and women put in thousands of manpower hours each year and answer calls at 2pm and 2am and the best you can do is bash them and say they were having a beer drive.

when firemen 'start fires' and cops 'break the laws they enforce'....the water tends to get a bit muddied.....yes?

I don't think anyone said that ALL firemen and cops are bad..........everyone is 'just sayin'.....k?

and to your point...yes they put in manpower and hours....but they know that BEFORE they volunteer or get paid for.....yes?

Local churches work hard feeding the poor.  I never see the parishioners walking down the middle of the road at a busy intersection soliciting money from people driving.  I'm pretty sure they would get arrested if they were walking in traffic.

Ye some cops and firemen are bad but give the good ones a break. It's not a beer drive. That money is used towards food/water at large fires to keep the firemen hydrated and fed so they can continue to work. The money is also put towards equipment to allow them to do their job more safely. And yes they know that they are sacrificing their time before they volunteer. But make it a little easier on them and don't sit here bashing them. The fire dept mentioned above does not have 1 paid firefighter. Each and every member of all 8 rotterdam fire dept's volunteer their time and leave behind families and friends to help others out. I'm just asking you be a little more courteous towards people who risk their lives to save yours.

Churches make their money during offering on Sunday morning and by having dinners/breakfasts.

isn't this the same fire dept that calls home to the TAJ MAHAL???

and I thought the money they get via the taxpayers, thru the town budget went towards their equipment?

that is what one of the volunteer fireman told me.

I was also told that there are volunteers that do get paid and/or get a small retirement.....and a property tax break.....yes? no?

where does the '5 mile back up' happen?
and what about the Biker's Breakfast....election day dinner.....etc?

and just for the record....folks were driving side roads to avoid 5 corners!!

There is a very minimal tax break for volunteers with a very sad retirement. Overall every firefighter in Rotterdam is volunteer. If you think that a small tax break and a small retirement is good enough for the work they do and the risks they take, I again ask that you go volunteer a little bit of your time and then let me know if you still feel the same way. And tax money these days does not go very far. I agree our fire taxes are way too high, but those taxes are necessary for the preservation of life. Unfortunately times are rough and equipment is over priced. Tax money alone cannot cover everything.

Hey...........I just wanted to clear up the fact that you said they got NOTHING! That was not true.
