When half of the residents are on welfare and the other half is overburdened with high taxation/fees.....ain't no money left to purchase much of anything!!

There isn't much to buy in Schenectday County. There is Walmart and Target and a few other big stores but the big shopping Centers are Colonie Center, Crossgates, are all Albany County. Latham and Cliftom Park are big draws too because of the variety available. Still no Schenectady though. I hate malls but Rotterdam Square really needs some revitalization to keep shoppers in this county!

The Wilton Mall area is packed almost every day and does a tremendous business on weekends.

Not a fair comparison, entirely different demographics. JMHO

Just ask yourself why the demographics are so different. Could it be high taxes, violent crimes, vacant houses, no jobs and failing infrastructure?

YUP!
And the welfare > worker stats would be interesting to see when comparing.
Altho.........many folks from Schenectady county go to other areas to shop.
Folks from Saratoga, Latham, Colonie DO NOT come to Schenectady to shop....there isn't anything here!
And Schenectady can't sustain itself.

The DEMS in control in Schenectady is to blame for sales tax down. Hostile business enviroment in Schenectady for the average business owner who is not Metroplex endorsed.  Free giveaway of taxpayers money to downtown is to blame. These bars, restaurant, bakery and proctors are a financial blight on the citizens and county of schenectady. They don't pay taxes and don't create significant jobs along with being in bed with the DEMS. Now CUOMO is pushing these PILOT programs in commercial START UP NY these programs will close many existing longtime businesses and will not create no jobs or sales tax revenue.

If you had mentioned that in your post, then I would have certainly agreed.

High taxes to me though is a relative term, as I'm sure everyone everywhere feels their taxes are too high. And of course EVERYONE does have the option of opting out of their high tax area and relocating to one more suitable for them. But remember one thing. Taxes NEVER go down. EVER!! To believe they will is foolish. JMHO

Notice that the resident board "cheerleader" for the dems and all their wild uncontrolled spending on downtown, i.e. DV, is NOT, and I repeat NOT, and I will repeat again, NOT going to respond in this thread.

We will NOT wee DV address the FACT that the dems are ruining Schenectady, and this FACT about the sales tax down is just MORE EVIDENCE that his buddy dems are ruining us.

All this wild uncontrolled spending on downtown has NOT resulted in places at which we can shop.

What people need to realize about sales tax is that it really is supposed to be paid to the county in which one resides.  But it's unrealistic to do so for lots of the shopping.  If I buy a DVD at Best Buy in Crossgates, I am not asked my address in order to determine what percent sales tax I pay and so Best Buy is not going to divide up the sales tax in any manner to make assumptions on where shoppers live.  FACT is the sales tax will go to Albany County.

If I were to buy appliances at Best Buy, that will be a bit different.  In that case they will charge the sale tax based on where I live and they will sort of earmark that tax to Schenectady.  Actually what happens I believe is that sales tax is collected and reported to the state, and the state will send the sales tax to the counties.  I don't believe the businesses actually write out a check that says "pay to Schenectady Co" or whatever county.

Likewise, if someone comes from Saratoga to buy appliances from Marcella's here in Schenectady, items like that WILL be taxed based on Saratoga Co, thus Marcella's will charge the person Saratoga Co tax and Marcella's will report the sale to a Saratoga Co resident when they file papers with the state send the money to the state who sends Saratoga Co their money.

But the DVD example no one asks us where we live, so we are charged based on the county in which we shop.

A better way to explain this is look at your state income tax forms.  A few years ago this was publicized more in the media.  I'm sure most people don't do this, but there is a line that asks you if you bought anything outside of NYS which you brought into the state. for which you did not pay NYS tax on it.  Yes, most may think of this as you order something online---most businesses will charge you your local tax.  Go to Walmart online, and when you fill out your information to pay and such, the website WIL calculate tax based on New York State AND Schenectady Co.  That's not necessarily true with things like e-bay (I'm not up on what is happening with that) but in theory if you bought on ebay and did not pay sales tax, then you need to report the sales tax on your income tax form.  Another example is you have gone to, say Daytona for the 500. While there you bought a tee shirt for $30 and a model car for $20.  You bring them home here in Schenectady.  The shirt is taxed only at 4% because it is clothing under $110 for whcih we do not pay state sales tax, but the model car is taxed a 8% which is both state and county sales tax.  You need to report and pay the tax that is for NYS and Schenectady county.  However, I don't completely understand the logistics of you paying some tax based on the location of Daytona, e.g., suppose you paid 2% county sales tax (of the county in which Daytona is located) on both the shirt and the model car.  I'm not sure how all that is figured and where reciprocity takes over and there might be places where you would think you'd get a "refund."

But in summary, sales tax is down in Schenectady because Schenectady CO has no place to whop, because the county is failing under the dems.  AND THAT IS A FACT and the big dem cheerleader will NOT reply in this thread to address the EVIDENCE that sales tax is don in Schenectady while up elsewhere----just like home values are down in Schenectady and going up elsewhere.

You are correct.

As far as buying an appliance, for example, if you pick it up yourself....that taxing district gets the sales tax.
If they DELIVER it to your location.....your location gets the sales tax.
obviously a dvd is not delivered so there is no question there.

great renaissance!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Thanks, I thought so, the better half didn't and so posted.  I said it seemed logical that a pick up oneself and paying in cash would probably negate identifying where one lives.       No big argument between us, just intelligent conversation.

Yeah, and you notice that DV REFUSES, ABSOLUTELY REFUSES to come to this thread and address the FACTS, facts for which the EVIDENCE has been provided.

He despises any criticism of his buddy dems and their wild uncontrolled spending, but he cannot cite one teeny weeny shred of proof WITH evidence, that Schenectady is getting better.  Well, other than to spew the usual babble about new buildings downtown.  Sure, it doesn't look as blighted, but the nicer appearance has resulted in blight throughout the city mushrooming beyond belief.  And hell, if downtown was a bunch of vacant buildings not paying taxes well, it's not paying taxes today either.

Actually prior to Stratton there WERE some properties paying taxes, such as Rudicks and Mr James, but plex and the dems ran them out of town, so now there are more properties downtown that are not paying taxes, and the burden has been shifted to the homeowners who can't afford it and are leaving or abandoning their houses, blight is growing, less property tax revenue because people can't afford to pay, less tax revenue because of owners who have been forced out of their homes by the city, less tax revenue because of those who gave up trying to sell because no one is buying in the city so the owners abandon their hours.  Taxes going way up, tax base going way down.  But DV REFUSES to address these FACTS for which the EVIDENCE is all available for anyone and everyone to see
