SCHENECTADY -- MVP Health Care announced on Friday that it plans to eliminate 100 jobs over the next few days. The health insurance company says the move is part of an ongoing effort to improve efficiency and provide affordable health coverage in the wake of healthcare reform. They say the positions will be eliminated through attrition, layoffs and by leaving some vacancies unfilled. "The health insurance industry is going through a time of unprecendented change, and we need a streamlined and nimble organization to stay ahead of the curve, " says MVP's President and CEO, Denise Gonick. The company says affected employees will receive severance pay and benefits. They will also be encouraged to apply for other positions with the company.

Didn't Metroplex provide monies for them to come in, and part of the agreement was to provide a certain number of jobs?  Take the money and run . . . .

Wonder who's next to layoff and move out of downtown since PILOT programs will end soon and the downtown cronies are going to have to pay taxes just like eveyone else. Let me guess a few Transfinder, GE, Proctors, Bombers the list goes on and on. These businesses all have one thing in common other than tax free zones (cough) Cuomo. They are all Democratic Party supporters .

MVP is really  no surprise. With the new healthcare mandating 'free services'........these insurance companies will be forced to cut somewhere to keep their profit margin a-float. Unfortunately....they will cut at the bottom so the top can still make their millions.

Hence....the customer will suffer.

I predict MANY if not ALL insurance companies will have substantial cuts. And it isn't just the insurance companies....this will trickle down to health facilities and doctors.

hang on to your health folks!!!!

"MVP lays off 41 in Schenectady, 68 overall"

Last January 41 employees gone...now another 100 this February??  Next year should we anticipate 150 more gone?

Insurance companies are not flush with money like they were a decade ago. I anticipate a lot more layoffs in this area due to the high concentration of health insurance jobs in the area. It was always a benefit in the past because employees could change organizations fairly quickly, and the companies had a pool of knowledgable candidates to choose from. I see a lot of people without jobs with their industry crumbling around them.

I remember that taxpayer monies went into this project. I thought it was for the demolition.....like over $20K or something like that....no sure! I remember folks bit@chin' because taxpayers were giving money to a multi-million dollar company(BBL) to help develop.....yes?....no?

"June 22, 2000 - The revitalization of downtown Schenectady will make a significant step forward on Thursday June 22 at 11:00 a.m. when company officials and state and local leaders gather to break ground for construction of a new corporate headquarters for MVP Health Plan. A seven-story building is being constructed at the corner of State Street and Nott Terrace. The building will accommodate the 700 MVP employees expected to be working at the company headquarters when the building opens. (click here to view architect's rendering)
The construction project is the largest in downtown Schenectady in more than 10 years.

Schenectady Development, LLC., a joint venture of the Galesi Group and BBL Construction Services, will own the building and lease space to MVP, which will initially occupy five of the seven stories for a total of 125,000 square feet of space. The building will be completed in the fall of 2001. Site work will begin later this month with the erection of steel scheduled to start in November.

The building is the first major project supported by the Metroplex Development Authority. Metroplex committed $10 million for construction of an 875-car parking structure and related improvements essential to the project. Metroplex also purchased a parcel of private land that is part of the site for the new building. The developer will also contribute $2,000 per parking space, an amount consistent with what the developer would have paid for surface parking in a suburban location. "

So... with the loss of 150 jobs in the last two years... does MVP have to start paying their full weight in taxes?? You know a GOOD economic developer might put in a contract that with less job creation or loss of jobs, the company will have to begin paying for the space they take up in the city. No jobs...no breaks....
