There are over 1 million people sitting in jail like animals for the same crimes this guy committed and the drug addiction he had, and I don't hear one ounce of empathy from people like Patches for those people.  But god forbid they die, now we must show our humanity toward this one person.  

Please, try to be consistent with your empathy.

It's not the time.  You beat the crap out of his character when he was alive, just let the guy (good, bad or indifferent) REST IN PEACE!

Knowing his history we should be glad he didn't kill an innocent person walking down the street when he was shitfaced behind the wheel. Yeah its sad he couldn't recover from his demons but his actions put all of us at risk that includes you and me and all our kids and family. Saying that I hope he is in a better place and at peace.

For the record the autopsy said he died of natural causes.

You are the anti drug crusader patches.  You are the one that has no tolerance for drug addicts and want them locked in cages and out of your sight.  How many drug addicts did John lock away and probably commended for by his superiors?  

I actually have no thoughts on this persons death.  Never met him.  I am indifferent, people die daily.  I'm commenting on the phony outpouring of sympathy for a person that suffered the same problems and demons that he would put people in jail for.

I just have to add...

I have a friend who is incredibly wonderful.  Possibly the sweetest, most thoughtful, caring person I know - maybe other than my mom.

She knew John Lewis and said once to me how wonderful he was, that she'd leave her kids with him in a heartbeat.

I know he had some troubles, but really we all do in some ways...  And until you personally experience the very dark place in your life...   Where depression, severe anxiety and rage all come together - you really have no idea what someone might be going through.

I don't know what his demons were - or if he was suffering from those the above... but I have experienced those deep pains one time in my life.  And I am fortunate that I had the strength to navigate through that time without doing something I would later regret.

In closing just let me say that according to my friend he was such a good guy - that I do really regret not offering to meet up with him to try to be a good influence in his life.

I agree with your post and heart felt sympathy.  My point is, as a society, we look at people(usually in the inner city and black)with the same emotional and addiction issues, and cheer the cops when they lock away people with these problems in jail.  It's as if as a society, we can't relate and want them banished from society so we don't have to deal with them.  America jails it's mentally ill and drug addicted without the same sympathy given to the ex cop.  You never read in the paper the chief of police expressing his sympathy for the black "junkie" they just locked away in prison.  But when it's one of their own, well, then it's worthy of a news article in the TU.

There is a class system in America, where some addicts deserve sympathy while others deserve condemnation.  It's sad.
