Heat treatment remediation has proven to be the most effective method that will exterminate bed bugs in all life cycles -

eggs, larvae, nymphs and adult. Adults and nymphs die within 15 minutes at temperatures greater than 113ºF, while it can take up to 60 minutes to kill eggs.

Raising room temperatures above the thermal death point and maintaining that temperature for several hours has the highest probability of extermination for the entire bed bug infestation and reducing the chance of re-infestation.

The upsurge in travel/globalization is bringing more people from places with bugs;but also although nobody will acknowledge it, the bugs are being shipped in with merchandise because nobody lives in GAP stores, yet NYC has found infestations in such places. The packaging contains pesticides, I'm told, but these insects are more resistant strains or something. They've been showing up in good hotels, but "how many of them go to hotels?" What a nasty thing to say. So, rich people aren't to blame for moving bedbugs around, just poor people.
We did have bedbugs back in the day, but then we had DDT.
Bedbugs don't necessarily live in beds, either. I used to be under the impression that they were in the mattress, but that is what people thought just because they came out and bit you at night when you were lying in bed. They can live anywhere.
Making tenants responsible is only going to make it worse, because why would you tell someone the minute you noticed a bug, if you were going to be made to pay for it?
The problem is that Schenectady has way too many absentee slumlords, way too many transient tenants from downstate, etc. We are doomed. One of the reasons we have the MHA is so that situations like this aren't allowed to develop; look at as now, our population down by 1/3, but our public housing is now inadequate.

Poor are being twice victimized on bedbugs

Re the Feb. 9 article “Bedbugs have Schenectady tenants, landlords at odds”: I’m writing concerning the bedbug epidemic within our community. This has plagued the very poor on a large scale, bringing financial hardship to this part of our community.

Recently our government has found health problems with the pesticides used. Consequently, they stop the use without putting anything else in its place, thus causing further devastation to indigent homes. And also causing some people to jump to negative conclusions of blame, with consequences of penalty against an already deprived and forgotten part of our community.

At the last council meeting she brought up mold in apartments not covered by codes and how it affects those with asthma etc especially children. The
pesticides used to treat bedbugs/roaches etc also affect those with breathing issues and can cause neuro damage.

Does anyone remember her saying about a year ago that she was going to run for city council in last year's election.  What ever happened to that?
