Rotterdam woman victim of scam Updated: Friday, January 17 2014, 01:31 PM EST ROTTERDAM --

Police are warning residents that someone claiming to be a utility worker convinced an elderly resident to let him into her home and ripped her off. Authorities say the man came to her door on Thursday afternoon around 1:30 claiming there was a gas leak nearby and that he needed to check her utilities. After the woman let him in, he sent her to check the water in the basement while he stayed upstairs. After he left, she noticed a small amount of money missing from her bedroom. The scammer is described as a Spanish-speaking man between 25 and 30 with a laminated name tag on his black jacket.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO DO SOMETHINGGGGGG!!!!

RE-ACT!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

I'm confused. How is this a town/government problem? I think this is more about people being smart enough to check who is coming to their door. Yes he had a badge, but where was his National Grid truck? Don't be foolish and let strangers into your house. Personal responsibility and good judgement go a long way.

I do have parents and they have common sense, you are only as vulnerable as you allow yourself to be. Wouldn't it set off warning bells for you that the "utilities worker" asked you to go into the basement and not go with you? Shouldn't they be the ones who check the basement if that is where the meters are?

Scammers target the elderly for a reason and that's because they're to trusting most of the time. Kids need to tell their parents or grandparents not to open the door if they don't know who the person is or tell them they need to make an appointment.

What an unkind statement about an elderly victim of a crime    The story does not tell all of the circumstances. Maybe the guy scared her by saying if he didn't check her house it could explode, Maybe she did ask where his truck was and he said he parked it down the road and was going door to door
warning neighbors about the "gas leak".

And like Henry said the elderly are sometimes too trusting because they grew up in an era when you could trust more than today.

So unfortunate and sad that you have no compassion for this poor lady.

We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.   Funny how that works.

K A L E, Kate, Kale. What's the difference?

Who are you the "common sense" police? You must be perfect and God bless your parents for bringing up someone so

compassionate and understanding. I don't think so.

In the interest of good grammar and common sense, I've edited your post so it can be read without a code book. You're welcome Latches.
