Almost ideal conditions, today especially, a big, big powdery snowfall, and then temperatures getting above freezing for personal comfort. I noticed some dads with the kids over in the park. When I was growing up, mom or dad might drop you off, if you were lucky, but if you were out of diapers you were pretty much on your own, out there in the freezing cold, your socks falling down in your boots, the icy, gravelly, granular snow scraping your ankles, snow up your back, your face getting redder and redder... those were the days.
Long before the Cheltingham dump was created, the hill off Jerome Ave was great for sledding on snow in the winter and with cardboard on long grass in the summer. I lived on Jerome Ave for the first 7 years of my life.
Shadow there were two hills, the smaller one towards the middle and the large hill most of us used on the corner. Do you remember the bump right in the middle of the hill? We'd go flying : ) I lived on Jerome Ave from age 6 to about 14.
Also used to hang out on the steps going from Jerome down to Cheltingham, when I skipped school
I flipped many times on that hump, you had to hit the bump just right or else. I lived at 1820 Jerome not far from the hill and stairs. We even rode on a neighbors bobsled, home made, down the long hill near the stream.

That will ruin your day! How long that sled rolled will give a clue of the incline he went up... he almost made it , but keeping a sled straight in those conditions is not as easy as it looks... that's why I avoided them when I was riding... I got out of the sport a few years ago mainly because I got tired of trailering 2-3 hours up and back just to find ridable snow... The snow around here just isn't reliable enough for the investment...take this weekend... it was great and then the rain..riding is shot around here until the next storm. I might pick up a cheap sled leave to at the lake to ride a few times a season, but that's as far as I'll go.

I used to love sledding down that big hill at Central Park, it was a accomplishment if you could reach the pond. That hill also had some big bumps in the middle and your a$$ would be hurting after a couple rides down Come to think of it I should metal detecting that area come spring, you know money, rings, and other jewelry go flying all over that hill.

we had a hill on the side on a thruway overpass that I could walk to.. the only thing was it was elevated and had drop off on each side.. so, when you went down it, you had to keep it straight, otherwise, you'd fall off the side...young bones didn't care tho...

Never heard of it, maybe all the members of this board should get together to relive our childhood sledding these hills, we can take bets on how many broken hips are suffered at the end of the day

It probably one of the biggest hills around that is easily accessible.
It's actually the power lines trail just off of Ennis Rd.
Ennis Rd is off of Pattersonville - Rynex Corners Rd not far from Mariaville Rd.
On a motorcycle or snowmobile those power lines take you from lock 8 to Mariaville Lake.
At the top of the hill another set of power lines cross and if you turn left you can ride the trail all the way to the giant power substation on New Scotland Ave. It's a nice ride with heavy terrain ranging from massive rocks and boulders to swamp lands.

yup... that's it... I used to sit at the bottom and watch the amateurs try to make it up on their sleds for the first time... it was entertaining!

sledding down Millard St dodging GE workers coming home from work........was the greatest...... ....then those who would be daredevils and sled down Hamilton Hill......
