popular rich kids deaths makes more of an impact than the suicides in Schenectady.....

the local media should be ashamed and are no better than the sh!t coming out of hollywood....

I was saying this same thing the other day. Poor, black teens from Schenectady die and the story is over in a day...rich, white kids from the suburbs die and it still brings people to tears a year later.

It's no wonder the kids here end up doing nothing of value with their lives, it's obvious that we as society don't think much of them.

Great observation senders. There was a letter to the editor in the Gazette making a similar point.

I'm an enigma, even to myself.

The teen car accident LAST YEAR is still being reported because the ones who died are portrayed as VICTIMS.
When a teen gets killed in 'the hood'....it's collateral damage.

That coverage of those kids was way over the top. It is part of the trend of sensationalizing every tragedy so that people can feel like they are part of it. Let the people who knew them mourn them, I was starting to feel like a voyeur.

Quoted Text
New York state will cut down on the distractions next month. A law will take effect Feb. 22 making it illegal for someone under 18 to drive with more than one non-family passenger younger than 21, unless the driver’s parent or guardian is in the car.

So this was a law passed in 2010. The kids that got hit.....how many were in the car.....and how old were they?
Was this issue ever brought up?

Was the driver ever ticketed for this?

People move out to these areas so their kids will be "safe", when kids have to get everywhere by car, with other kids and no adult, they are way, way less safe. I'm not blaming these kids, but a more experienced driver might not have had such a bad accident. IMO, no one under 18 should be driving the Northway, it is not a road for the novice driver.
I think there is a trend toward making celebrities out of everyone possible, so if you are some kind of victim and are appealing enough, you are a candidate for fame.

some of these comments are way over the top....

the teens that died at the hands of a kid on drugs, texting, and looking to buy and sell drugs...

even tho you may think it was over the top.....there are many such accidents that do not get the media

attention,,,,what did that lady get who killed 3 women waiting at an area church?......she was on a drug..

what did the driver get who killed that person on Erie/State??????

5-15 years.....debateable.....showed little or no remorse???....probably was told to do that...

justice is not always fair...but this young kid will have to live with it for the rest of his life.....

I just think that the local news should not be assigning worth to kids who get killed, by memorializing some and not others.

The local "news" is lazy. There was a young, pretty black college student run over by a drug addict in Schenectady a couple of years ago. It was merely covered as a crime story. Certainly there was no coverage of memorials then or a year later. The Shen kids surely were similar victims, but the coverage of the death resulted in live coverage of memorials at the Shen football field. It is easier for the media to report the stereotypes.

Don't watch the news.  It warps your perception of reality.  If you watch the news, and form your perceptions around their selected stories, it would lead you to believe little blonde haired white girls are the only ones that get abducted and murdered.  You never see stories of minorities getting abducted and murdered.  It must be some kind of statistical anomaly.

Even locally ... watch ... if it is a story about Saratoga it is all good and happy or if it is bad they keep it short ... but stories about here are all bad.

That's what made me mad about the white drug addict in a suburban neighborhood, breaking into houses. The media brought Schenectady into it. Well, guess what? We don't have the money in Schenectady to support all this crime, we have the crime from all these outsiders bringing their dirty business here and then thinking they are better than us.
