This type of show does not attract older white people from the outlying areas. The target audience mostly can't afford to go to shows.
The thing with Proctor's is, it is in Schenectady, and it had a specific purpose, and going outside of that scope and purpose does not appear to work. If Proctor's could expand beyond that original purpose, without going over budget, wonderful. But this incarnation of Proctor's does not appear to have any defined mission or any sense of any kind of budget at all. Where are the performance measures? Oh, but it isn't a business? Then why has it expanded into some very businesslike areas, and why do we keep seeing these 'economic engine' articles? What is the bottom line?
When the wonderful volunteers got shaken down for memberships, that alone should have been enough to draw intense scrutiny of exactly what was going on here, with the public's money.

Went to Proctors last week and it was disgusting! Peeling paint on the walls, the nasty, old, molded water fountains haven't been fixed/repaired or torn out in decades!! All I could think is...where the heck did millions of dollars in grant money go to?? If this is the crown jewel of Schenectady, the City doesn't have a chance of real success!!

I thought the crown jewel was central park but that isn't saying much either

The crown jewel designation changes, depending on where they are currently dumping money to benefit a chosen few. Central Park was the crown jewel, now we have abandoned, fancy tennis courts the people aren't allowed to use there. They have the rotten, ugly plastic curtain back up on the rotting, ugly pavilion because some private group pays to use it in the wintertime.
The last time I was in Proctor's, there were some very expensive looking doors installed between the lobby and the seating area. I don't remember those ever having been there before. I don't think the money for refurbishing the place was well spent.

Henry is naked with out his gun... and as we all know, for some with "special" insecurities... a gun is
a phallic symbol that is very important to certain Right Wingers insecure about their sexuality.

Henry with out his gun is naked... and being naked... the 'truth' is 'exposed'!

philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Never Mind Henry... It's beyond your comprehension.

See video below:

Proctors  and METROPLEX/GILLEN and Stratton, and Savage and McMayor....with all of the millions of dollars in loans/grants and loss of taxes via exemptions, has done NOTHING to help relieve the taxpayers. It hasn't helped the value of properties. It hasn't helped the home sales. It has in fact hurt them.

I'm not a fan of Morris....but hell....don't blame him so much as the folks who continue to support him and who put him in that position. Morris is just livin' HIS dream on the backs of the taxpayers. And the taxpayers are getting nothing for their investment.

You know, bt, I think you hit the nail on the head. Morris is living his dream, and he probably thinks it is having all this positive effect, because nobody tells him any different.
We all saw what the problem was with that other art venue, remember the Van Dyke debacle? No matter how many times that place was bailed out, it was going to fail again. If you measured success in artistic terms, the jazz featured was quality music. A vibrant, thriving city probably could have supported it.
Proctor's is the same way, it is being propped up by taxpayers because it is "good for" Schenectady, so nobody looks too closely at it. You look closely at that much ballyhooed remodeling, and you see the glaring omissions, such as those water fountains. Yes, they are very expensive to either restore or replicate, but shouldn't that have been undertaken before that remodeling of the arcade, or the sidewalks, or a glitzy marquee? It goes to show that preservation of our historic treasure wasn't the point of the money spent. Also, a business that receives taxpayer support has no business branching out into other areas, as we've seen Proctor's do. What has Key Hall got to do with the arts?
Nobody questions why, with all the "economic development" going on downtown, a business like Michael's, one that is needed in this area, skipped right over us. Our "planners" are pushing what business we have out, without attracting new ones.
I know this is repetitious, but you never know, one more person could wake up.

Exactly. If you want to really know bloated salaries for the 80+ employees. More bad news in today's Gazetto. With the Holiday Inn closing for 8 months to become a Double
Tree Hotel most of the hotel tax is also going to disappear. Hotel Tax that 100% goes to Morris. When you ar in a hole stop digging. Schenectady is not and never will be an art
center. See yous at the next Art Night I mean stroll.

They could hire a bunch of random unemployed people for most of those jobs. Ten bucks an hour. Or make it a real educational venue and have the SCC students run it, and mentor some of the high school kids in internships. You'd still have the theater available for community purposes, and you could still feature the Broadway stuff, but the budget would be equal to the tax break the community is paying for. We don't know what alternatives might work until we have some way of measuring what we are trying to accomplish.
