We did have magnet schools. Everybody wanted their child to be chosen in the "lottery" for the "good" magnet school, Howe, and when they didn't get picked, they sold their houses, and the people who lived right next to the school and could not send their kids there, saw the value of their house drop.
When the magnet program was moved to Central Park, as a k-8 program, against the wishes of the parents, more people sold their houses.
You are not allowed to select out all the kids who behave and learn. If you only want your child to attend school with non-violent, non-disruptive kids, you have to move to another district, and you are a racist, prejudiced, worthless person.
Most kids that I went to school with who lived in the subsidized housing projects, who I assume came from low-income households, did okay in school and graduated high school.

Thank you for this. I am only in this city a decade so have some details to learn.

I understand people thinking the schools in the suburbs are naturally better but a smart kid can also learn in a diverse district. In fact this child may learn more about real life this way which helps in the long run.

Our schools were always 'diverse', but when so many families from downstate were dumped here, it started to tip the balance that some schools had a larger percentage of one "kind" than another. This led to some people thinking one school was better than another, which led to the social engineers instituting busing under the pretense of "declining enrollment" and "saving money". The enrollment did not decline, and no money was saved.
You are not allowed to prefer one school over another, on the basis of how the other parents raise their kids. You can, however, move away from the district and criticize the entire district, but only if you pretend it is for some other reason than the fact you don't want your kids going to school with horrible, violent, disruptive children.
As far as 'poverty' being the reason kids don't succeed in school, those of us with more experience with the lower rungs of the economic ladder, know that is bs.
There was a new study out recently, kids in England who qualify for free lunches in school, presumably "poor", the black kids were beating the white kids on academic tests, but it was black kids from Africa doing better than the native English white kids. Who was it who posted somewhere on this site about people not believing that somebody not like you can accomplish the same as people like you? I think that's exactly right. I wish the schools would shove all this race and 'diversity' and 'income inequality' crap and just worry about imparting knowledge to a new generation.

you know that feeling when someone looks at you and you know they are 'uncomfortable' with your different 'situation' and
project their victim-love at you...it ceases to be respect and becomes a 'poor poor human, you don't look, live, act like
me so you must have a lesser brain/body etc than me and I will do all I can to pour my sorrow-fear onto you so you
know I'm not like those horrible people and those horrible situations you have because you are not me.'

that damages the psyche of a human just as much as 'a$$holes' one comes in contact with.....

it requires more than the self shoulder patting and 'teacher of the week' awards to treat a human as a human instead of
a label...being diverse means MUCH MORE than saying "we take care of the poor poor humans who are not like me"

humans are not badges to wear....or trophies to be won....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
