War Over the WarthogsThe U.S. spent more on defense in 2012 than did the countries with the next 10 highest defense budgets combined. This spending is unsustainable, especially in bad economic times. In the negotiations about which weapons systems we NEED and which systems we WANT, comes a glaring difference of purpose. The A 10 Warthog is a very capable infantry support weapon. If you are a 'grunt', it's the right tool for the job. The US Air force wold rather scrap the weapon in favor of a 'multi use' platform, which brings out the classic weapons procurement argument about how to spend our shrinking budget to fill the need for tomorrow's engagements. When we finally decide to shrink our military, we need to be sure that 'Hi Tech' doesn't take the place of 'what actually works'.
