SCHENECTADY — A lacrosse team visiting from Hartwick College had thousands of dollars' worth of property and cash stolen from the locker room of Union College while they played a scrimmage on Sunday, officials said.
The men's team members came back to the locker room at around 2 p.m. to find that more than $500 cash, 16 cell phones, six pairs of headphones, a watch and two pairs of sunglasses had been taken, college spokesman Phil Wajda said.
The athletes from the college in Oneonta were competing in the scrimmage along with students from the College of Saint Rose.
It is unclear if the locker room door was left unlocked. The Schenectady Police Department is investigating the thefts.

Colleges have always been a hotspot for crime, Union was just an exception to the rule because they were located in a very low crime city. Notice all the beefed up fencing and lighting? Notice that the Old Blue Gate is closed and locked? You really can't leave valuables lying out in the open in any locker room anywhere, though. That's why they call them lockers. I hope they get their stuff back. That happens, sometimes. Union has been getting negative press a lot lately.
The neighborhood around Union has deteriorated rapidly. A couple years ago someone was shot by a gang banger by the main gates. Buying up Seward Place has secured one side but with lower Eastern resembling HH but they can't buy up all bordering blocks. This has been hushed up by the comatose local media like the armed robbery at gunpoint during dinner service Saturday at Tara Kitchen on Liberty St.
Kids get robbed there by stick-up men all the time and you never hear about it. They usually steal their pocketchange, credit cards and cell phones

Locker rooms left open are not a good idea, anywhere. Union needs to provide better security to visitors. They can afford it. The kids being under sixteen (middle school age?) they will go to family court, and you won't know what happens, but they are most likely free to wander right this very moment.

Well Hartwick geniuses apparently don't know about lockers and locks.
The locker room door is the second level of security.
And there must be cameras showing who goes in or out.
I guess Schenectady thieves are just smarter than college students, college security guards, alarms, surveillance systems, lockers and padlocks.
16 college geniuses had their phones taken and not one was smart enough to have Apple's Find My iPhone service, or Android Device Manager —Google's baked-in anti-theft tool.
You access the Android Device manager through Google's Web portal. The large map should indicate the last known position of your device. If you don't see it, try hitting the Locate This Device button on the white inset window. Remember that the location is approximate, usually within 25 meters.
Lastly, bringing $5,000 in cash to Schenectady sounds like drug customers.
