I equate public school to Walmart. How many people enjoy going into Walmart? How many people avoid going at all costs? Imagine if you were forced to go shopping at Walmart everyday, how happy would you be? That is public schooling.

Put cameras and metal detectors in the house. Use the I phone to track them, view their Internet history and TV viewing history with a smart TV. Let them know their behavior is always being monitored. Because that is the real world.

Sorry Cicero, public schools have to stay open, it's our responsibility as adults to have free education for the masses. Although Schenectady REALLY needs a Charter School for both Middle & High Schools. Uniforms, strict rules...many Schenectady youth need that structure.

The ratios in the elementary school are not good either. Every single one is a failing school. I don't see how closing one would improve the situation. The middle school and high schools can't be ignored, but even worse elementary schools isn't going to improve education...or attract families.

When did it become your responsibility to give my child a "free" education? sh*t, if I knew that, I would stop stressing... Like educating MY children was my responsibility. How easy. Phew! So let me get this straight, I send my kids to the "free" school to educate my kids. And this school has nearly a 50% failure rate, and I have to wait around until you(or the adults) fix my kids "free" school? It sounds like a great system. Hopefully my child ends up as one of the 50% that pass, and doesn't become a drug addict or mixed up in gang activity.
Dont be offended Rachel, that was a lot of tongue in cheek. The point I was trying to make is - first education isn't free, and second - a child's education is the parents responsibility, not the parents contribution to a collective schooling that you throw your kid in and hope for the best.
Don't give up your control over your child's education. Responsible parents sending their children to a failing/dangerous school and waiting for the collective to fix it is futile. The damage to your child may already be done while waiting for the collective change to the school.
My suggestion for abolishing public school is to return the responsibility for educating children back to the parent. And with the end of public school and money back into the parents pocket, as well as the control on where they are schooled, it will correct the social problems.
There is nothing worse than feeling helpless to a system you really have no control over. People panic when you suggest ending government schooling. The thing is, do you really think millions of public school teachers and administration would go flip burger? No, they would open schools to accommodate their customers.
How long before schools start injecting RF ID chips into the kids.

Sad thing is, back in the 1960's and 70's, Schenectady schools ranked #3 in all of New York State...that's right, they were some of the best schools around. Back then there were more kids, a smaller budget, yet for some reason, it worked. Of course, GE was in full swing then too.
Now, there is a system in Schenectady that has hundreds of less students, a budget aound $60 million and it can't seem to graduate 60% of it's students. Maybe the fact that most of the budget is spent ensuring retirement/pensions, lifelong medical benefits, salaries of $100k for admin. A strong union is one thing, but when that interferes with educating kids, we as New Yorkers should begin to open our eyes.
You can't simply shut down schools or ask all parents to participate in their kids education when the sad truth is, more taxpayer money is being spent on everything OTHER than the kids LEARNING needs. Follow the school taxpayers dollars...maybe a few cents buy books and educational materials..the rest go into a union 'fund'.
