Three teens have been indicted on high-level assault counts in connection with an attack this summer inside the Bow Tie Cinema downtown, a prosecutor said Friday.

The attack took place at the conclusion of a late June 28 showing of “White House Down,” during which the teenagers had been disrupting the show, prosecutor William Sanderson said.

They eventually turned their attention to a man there with his daughters, Sanderson said. They assaulted him in the theater before they left, leaving him with a concussion, broken bones in a hand, tooth damage and torn-up skin on his knees.

One of the man’s daughters also got hit and knocked to the floor as she tried to come to her father’s aid, Sanderson said, and her phone was stolen.

Police responded quickly, Sanderson said, and arrested one of the youths nearby. The ensuing police investigation led them to the others. At least one other arrest in adult court is expected, Sanderson said.

The three teens were indicted on charges of first-degree gang assault and first-degree assault, both high-level felonies that carry possible sentences of as much as 25 years in prison.

Terrell Bell, 16, of 223 Duane Ave., Schenectady, and Jonas Jeannot, 18, of 1133 Country Club Drive, Niskayuna, were arraigned Friday and pleaded not
guilty. The third teen, Dashawn Harrison, 16, of Duane Avenue, will be arraigned in the near future.

Two or three others have also been charged as juveniles, Sanderson said.

Contacted Friday, a police spokesman called the incident an isolated one in an area that is statistically the safest in the city.
A representative of the theater echoed those remarks. Sanderson, too, called it isolated. It’s the only such incident he’s aware of, he said, and he
personally sees movies there regularly, never with any problems.

“I suppose anywhere something like this could happen if the wrong groups of kids get together,” Sanderson said.

The incident happened at the 10 p.m. showing of the movie, Sanderson said. About 10 or 15 youths were in the group, both boys and girls.
They made noise, some ran the aisles and some even banged on garbage cans.

Sanderson said he is not aware of anyone alerting cinema staff to the disruption, but the father eventually expressed his irritation by snapping his fingers
as one of the youths passed in the aisle. Sanderson described the man as in his 40s and from Niskayuna.

“They got up and they decide they’re going to retaliate against him for this,” Sanderson said of the finger snap.

As the movie ended and the lights came up, they started to hit him as they left.

“Then he gets up to try to stop them and they just surround him and beat the daylights out of him,” Sanderson said.

The attack included kicks and punches, he said. The man’s concussion symptoms have lingered, increasing the seriousness of the charges to high-level
felonies, he said.

As that went on, one of the man’s daughters tried to pull the teens off her father, asking them to stop. One of the attackers then turned and hit her,
knocking her to the floor, Sanderson said. Also with the victim was a friend of the daughters.

At least eight of the youths were actively involved in the attack, Sanderson said. “It was over before I think anybody realized it was happening,” he said.

The youths then fled on foot, but police responded quickly. They detained Harrison near the scene and he was identified as an attacker.

Sanderson was initially charged with second-degree robbery, along with misdemeanor assault, petty larceny and child endangerment counts.
A grand jury, though, increased those to the first-degree assault and first-degree gang assault.

The rest were identified through witnesses, as well as the help of surveillance video from the theater and street cameras, Sanderson said.

Joe Masher, Bow Tie chief operating officer, said Friday the incident was an isolated one and that there have been no other problems at the theater.
The staff, he said, has cooperated fully.

Police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken noted the quick response and the arrest near the scene.

“The detectives did a fantastic job following up” and making later arrests, he said.

McCracken, referencing crime statistics, said the incident is not representative of the area. An officer is dedicated to walking or biking downtown
weekdays, and there is a community officer assigned to the Stockade and downtown. Special events bring an added police presence.

Probably started off like this, to bad it didn't end the same way.

You are  hell-bent on making all kinds of stupid and nasty remarks without any shred of actual evidence to back it up.

No evidence?   Gee, here is from court records, I guess that is not evidence.

Oh wait, that's only in "indictment," no evidence, they will be found not guilty

Mayor McCarthy and his team are doing a great job in the city.  Keep up the good work.

From the Galesi website:

"Property Management      Galesi Management Corporation

Established in both local and national communities for over 40 years, Galesi Management Corporation’s experienced team of professionals specializes in management, leasing, and marketing.

Galesi Management Corporation (GMC) provides competitive rates for tenant and property management services for third party owners of Commercial and Industrial properties, Medical/Healthcare Offices, Mixed Use facilities, and Multi-Family communities. Furthermore, our management team is supported by a full array of real estate, accounting, finance, and administrative specialists to yield owners their maximum return on their investment by providing Full Service Professional Building Management..."

Please note that the Bow Tie Cinema is one of the clients of the Galesi Property Management Service (as is the Golub Headquarters, an Albany Medical Arts and several Texas companies).

Maybe this is why this June 28th incident was never in the news until September 28th...wouldn't want to ruin the summer movie schedule.

Hum, what else has gone on in a Galesi managed building ......

And not to change the subject exactly, but just touch briefly because you brought up Galesi.

Remember that Galesi has so many different company names, that is how they get around any limits to political contributions.   Each different name will donate.

All those lavish political contributions to the dems in return for the dems STEALING from the homeonwers to pay the taxes of Galesi!

Not only is Galesi raping the taxpayers of this City, but he's able to keep criminal activity which occurs on his managed properties out of the press. That's also putting the people in this City in harms way as well.

Maybe the 'safest' part of the City is a Galesi fairy tale ....

Would you like real butter on your popcorn? It really helps to salve the wounds when some urban yutes decide to beat you up so badly you need to be hospitalized, while you enjoy a fine feature film in our "safe" downtown theater!

Nice editorializing about Schenectady. The only reason the theater is "statistically" safer is because most people from Niskayuna would not venture therewith their kids to a movie that might attract young people from the Hill area, which is in walking distance of the theater. Management says there aren't other incidents at the theater, but then they state that there were no problems reported until the fight broke out, which tells me that there could likely be problems at other times, and patrons follow the usual procedure of putting up with it and resolving never to go back their again. Which is exactly whatI was afraid would happen when it was decided to locate a theater there.
I think they wanted to attract the college crowd, the age that goes to movies most, but college kids these days have cars and they go to Crossgates, because that is a centralized gathering place for other college age kids.
Notice the cop did not say, "oh, that place is so safe I go there with my kids all the time". Do they, the downtown crowd, realize how ridiculous it sounds for people who refuse to live here themselves to tell us what it is like where we live?

An example of an incident downtown that never got reported as crime: A couple years ago, just before Christmas, a man was in the Wendy's on Erie Boulevard with his young son. It was well after dark, but still fairly early, I think they may have attended some sort of Christmas event for children. Anyway, a man entered the Wendy's and got into a shouting match with the employees behind the counter. It seemed directed at one woman in particular, and the employees seemed to know who he was. He screamed filthy obscenities at the woman, and then stated that he was going to go get his gun and come back and shoot everybody. I saw the little boy flinch when the man said that. Do you think that father will venture downtown again? Statistically, nothing happened, right?

Even though i agree.....please explain exactly how different things would be under the rep leadership???? It was they who established the tax-sucking METROPLEX....yes?

I would have to bet that things would look just like they do today.....only the 'beneficiaries' would look different!

Well, if you kick out the current bunch of hogs at the trough, it puts the new ones on notice that the electorate has woken up and won't stand for any crap for too long. Also, it is always better to change horses when you know the one you are riding gas broken down. Mr. Riggi isn't a self-serving lunkhead, a vote for him was worth it, we just need a couple more to support him.

It wouldn't be different with the past crop of GOPers except maybe about 5% less.

With new GOPers in, there is a chance for a greater change. And like diapers- politicians need to be changed often.

I always say that the repubs screw us monday, wednesday and friday but the democraps work overtime screwing us 7 days a week and want to add an 8th day if possible. You have to admit it is true, they are so far removed from reality and decency that it is impossible bearing them

there is no zero tolerance in this county.....slap on wrists and go at it again.....it's not either party to blame .....it's society and the way bad behavior

is accepted.....it stems from parenting and peer pressure on the young kids today...it's cool.....look at what happened in Stephentown....300 or more kids

trashing someone else's property and not batting an eyelash....and the parents??????????????....NOT MY KID.......

and what does it matter whether this home is in foreclosure or who owns it.....they had NO RIGHT there.

glad they are getting the punishment they deserve.....and there is more to this story than just that according to the news this AM....

Law needs to step it up and punish those for whatever crime they commit.....and parents need to be accountable too.....

Society is a mess today.....and it's not about pointing fingers at a particular political party......
