2 bystanders wounded in police shooting on crowded street in midtown Manhattan
Published September 15, 2013
Associated Press

NEW YORK –  NYPD officers fired three shots on a crowded Manhattan street near Times Square on Saturday night, missing the man they believed had a weapon but striking two bystanders, police said.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue near the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Police said officers saw a man on foot weaving erratically through traffic and sometimes blocking vehicles. After approaching him, police said, the man reached into his pocket as if grabbing a weapon, and two officers fired a total of three shots. They missed him but struck a 54-year-old woman in the right knee and a grazed a 35-year-old woman in the buttocks, police said.

The women were taken to hospitals, where they both were listed in stable condition, according to police. Neither had injuries considered life threatening, police said.

The man was taken into custody after a police sergeant subdued him with a Taser. No weapons were found on him.

Police said the 35-year-old suspect was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in stable condition. They described him as "emotionally disturbed."

Police did not release the names of the women or the man in custody.

Version 2.0

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two people were shot in Midtown when a gunman started firing on a busy Saturday night.

The incident happened just before 10 on 42nd Street and 8th Avenue near the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Officers blocked off the intersection as they combed through evidence, and looked for bullet casings.

Police say they currently have one person in custody.

Cell phone video showed a man running out of control through traffic.
The man was cornered by a dozen police officers, and he appeared to be holding a weapon.

One man is injured, and it is unclear whether police shot him or not.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, and there is no word on his condition.

Eyewitness Frederick Soler says he heard about 20 shots ring out.

If Bloomberg had put as much effort into making a safe place for these people as he did butting into people's personal refreshment choices this would not have happened. The greatest city in the world and people with serious mental health issues are either running around in traffic or thrown in jail. Disgusting.

It is ok- those are the protectors' bullets

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

They are cops and they fired hand guns into a crowd, not "assault rifles" so it's ok.  20 rounds out of hand guns are much different than 20 rounds out of a rifle or any other gun.

Did the guy with the gun fire it or not? In either story, it doesn't confirm that.

The problem is that the NYPD seem to be terrible at hitting what they aim at....What is this? Like the second time in 6 months they hit civilians?

In most cases, 20 rounds out of a pistol would travel a shorter distance, and with less punch,
than 20 rounds out of a rifle of similar caliber.

A .45 ACP will go 1800 yards max. with a muzzle velocity of 850 feet per second.
A 30 06 springfield will go almost 5700 yards max. with a muzzle velocity of 2700 feet per second.

Then you should need a permit for rifles and not for hand guns based on those statistics.

I remember the last one when the media was in a frenzy talking about a mass shooting, it turned out the killer shot and killed who he was aiming for, the cops on the other hand unloaded on the citizens trying to get away, after that was found out the media never mentioned it again

The guy they were chasing never had a gun.

They just shot because they said they saw him reach for something.

The only gunshots fired were friendly government issued bullets.

I didn't hear about that Henry.  So the 'media' ignored that story.  Please tell us the shooters name
so we can find out the details for ourselves.  It sounds like an interesting story.
