No, it doesn't look great or people would not be upset about it. Wear blinkers if you can't avoid staring off to the side while driving - the rest of us don't need a wall to keep our attention where it should be.

The only people who are upset about it are a bunch of sourgrapes whining, nonsense babbling nayboobs and a woman who apparently is too wide to fit on an 8 foot wide sidewalk.

Hey, you wouldn't walk OR ride a bike across the bridge,    Keep being the little boy driving around in mama's car, live in mama's house, live off mama.

the original Western Gateway bridge had high walls and a roof -- similar to a covered bridge only less attractive

Great Letter to the Editor in the Daily Gazette on September 17.  The Letter a) reiterated my point that previous iterations of the Western Gateway Bridge were built in such a way as to obstruct the view of the river, b) that motorists should be paying attention to WHERE THEY ARE DRIVING and not to the view and c), most importantly, there are other people who have absolutely no problem with the "wall."  The only people making a fuss are the nayboobs -- who get their jollies whining, carping and complaining all the time.

When are you going to buck your party in regards to REMS and the paramedics?

Photos show old bridge wasn’t place for sightseeing, either
The recent spate of letters concerning the railing of the Western Gateway Bridge (the 2013 edition) has now culminated in a Gazette [Sept. 12] editorial. Unfortunately, most of these communications are either based on a profound lack of (historical) information or come from those enamored of looking elsewhere while driving, a practice to be avoided, in my humble opinion.

Regarding the historical part, I have found several photos of the old Western Gateway Bridge (before the last edition) taken by my father on several occasions during the 1950s. Two things are noticable from these photos.

First, the new railing, while not a perfect match for the old bridge, is a much better rendition of the historical form than either the recent bridge railing, or any conceivable railing design that purports to allow a fine view of the Mohawk River.

Second, although there were certainly spaces/gaps in the old railing, they were hardly amenable to taking a good view of the river, considering their size, spacing, and the thickness of the concrete wall.

I daresay that the old bridge designers knew what they were doing: it’s not a particularly good idea to sightsee from a car on a bridge.

One additional insight might be taken from these photos. Even without the vantage point of the roof of the Van Curler (now SCCC), it is possible to get a very fine view of the river (including ice jams) from the bank of the river. One can only pity those who cannot find the time to stop, park (pretty easily done), and walk over to the riverbank to take in a leisurely view. You don’t even have to be particularly fit (and certainly not an athlete) to do this.

For those who want the real experience, I suggest that a gentle stroll onto the bridge would be far more rewarding than the view from a moving car.

The mayor of Scotia should know better!

How about the wife and children that are in the car?   They should look at a wall?

Can you answer that question/

Oh, you would have no idea because you don't have a wife (why not) and children.

When your mommy is driving and paying attention, guess you as a passenger prefer looking at a wall?

Thank you, MC, I really get sick of these people with the narrow viewpoint calling other people names or knocking them when they are able to see beyond their own self-interest. I don't ride a bike, who cares about bicycles, I don't have kids or passengers, who looks at a view, I don't walk, who cares about pedestrians, etc. Aren't the majority of Schenectady residents either seniors or very young? And who said our government was allowed to put up walls to keep us from looking at our scenery? AND, in defensive driving class, they also warn you against staring at the road straight in front of you, you are supposed to sweep the periphery, to avoid fatigue and to note possible hazards.
The bridge was not built to correct us, anyway, it was just an oversight. The bridge up in Latham at exit 6 features concrete walls, there isn't anything scenic right there and the walls look as good as the road below. The design was just inappropriate for the western gateway, that's all, and our leaders should have been paying attention to prevent this. People who are trying to maintain safety and scenery at the historic entrance to our once beautiful city are negative complainers? Only in the mind of someone who thinks he is the last word on "planning". Planning actually involves thinking ahead, and thinking of the needs of all residents.

It is now quite readily known among people, the reason for the appearance of this bridge.

McCheese's "right" (wrong) hand man was an engineer with state DOT.

McCheese is blocking the view for people leaving the city, he doesn't want anyone to see how nice things look beyond Schenectady.

McCheese wants to block the view coming into the city because, really, he needs to hide the blight that is the city, otherwise people will simply pull a U-eey at the end of the bridge and high tail it right back out of the city.

bt, the state only concerns itself with state owned bridges, and with inspection of highway bridges. Guess who owns the oak street bridge, and guess what that means as far as when it will get done?
The looks of the Western Gateway, all things being equal, there was no point at all to putting up that wall and it should not have been done. I really don't know why someone would bother to write a letter to the paper knocking people for wanting a bridge at least as safe AND attractive as the one replaced, that seems like a very weird thing to do, unless, of course, one has a finger in the pie somewhere, or is doing some sucking up in hopes of benefitting sometime in the future.

All bridges are NOT under the control of the state.  The Western Gateway Bridge is because Route 5 is a state road.   Oak Street is NOT a state road but a city road which happens to go over a privately owned railroad line.  THAT is what is complicating matters because the railroad company has not been willing to cooperate with the city on the matter of paying to replace or repair the bridge.
