That's true.
However, the sad truth is that half the city are not people who write out the check 4 times a year. Thus I'd wouldn't expect half the people to say the same thing.
And of the people who do write out the checks, even a large percentage of them are absentee and don't care as any increases can be passed on to the tenants.
The people who are tenants don't make the connection of increasing rents to taxes.
And overall, sadly most of the people see the new buildings downtown and think everything is getting better.
Again, talking tenants, some realize that when they here the city say "tax increase" they comprehend that translates to rent increase. But the overwhelming majority of renters have no clue about those terms tax levy, tax rate, tax bill, tax exemption and certainly don't understand the impact these dems in the city have on their rents.
And generally renters have no clue about how the value of the property in which they live is falling. They have no comprehension that their landlord has a mortgage balance of $100,000 but the house is only worth $75,000.
The intelligent people have put their homes up for sale and have already fled the city, as you can see by the huge numbers of houses for sale that the ads show empty houses. They have resigned themselves to the fact that they will not get anywhere near what the city says the house is worth, they have resigned themselves to the fact that they won't get near their listing price, that they will go through many price reductions and will have to pay taxes in the meantime. For those that have long paid off their houses, well, if they bought a house for $30,000 back in the 60's or 70's they might as well be happy to sell their house for $50,000 and hope that over their 40 or 50 years that they haven't spent more than $20,000 on improvements. Take what you can get for it. Those who may have bought in the past 10 years, they may be, no, they ARE in a HEAP OF TROUBLE. They very well may owe more on their mortgage than they can sell for, and/or whatever improvements they've made, well, they WILL be taking quite a loss.
It is this kind of information that the opponents to the dems need to drive hope in campaigning this fall

Of those absentees who write out the checks and pass along the costs, the tenant gets the money from "the government" (us) at least in part. Here is something I have been thinking about: up in one of the northern counties, someone from law enforcement was saying, on television, that he hired an investigator for welfare fraud and it saved them money, even with paying for the investigator, and he didn't know why more counties don't do it.In Schenectady county, we act as if all the free money from DSS doesn't cost the local taxpayers a thing. How can that be? Why don't we get some investigators? Is it because in the northern counties, most of the welfarites are white, so the sheriff isn't afraid of being called racist? Remember, catchingsomeone committing fraud isn't an attack on poor people, they are eligible for benefits.
The rats are deserting the ship in Schenectady. It will be really hard to spin "we needed a bigger house". That speaks for itself. I bet they all voted for their democratic slate for the school board too. That still burns me, we had a decent candidate who had ideas for genuine improvement, but noooo, we had to get some more politicians in there.
